A guinea pig might seem like an insignificant pet to most people, but for this Florida family, their pet guinea pig named Rodney is an integral part of the family.
However, Rodney’s short life nearly came to an end when the Waller family’s home was engulfed in flames. Thankfully, the Polk County Fire Department arrived at the scene quickly and Kristi Waller and her children got out of the house safely, but in their panic they left behind their beloved Rodney.
Fireman John Williams refused to leave Rodney behind, and put his own life in serious danger to rescue the family’s pet as he bravely entered the burning home.
Williams was able to save Rodney, but the guinea pig had inhaled so much smoke and needed emergency oxygen. At first, the rescue team struggled to find a suitable mask tiny enough for Rodney, but they improvised with a baby’s air mask.
“I’m so incredibly thankful for Polk County Fire Rescue for saving Rodney. They were very nice to him and myself,” Waller said. “I have the utmost respect for firefighters in the first place, but to see them care so much for something so small because of what he meant to our family was truly moving.”
