One of the hardest parts of being a deployed soldier, apart from putting their life in danger every day, is having to be away from friends and family for months and sometimes years at a time without any idea of when or if they’ll ever see their loved ones again.

Mike Vickers, a Tech Sergeant with the US Air Force, has been stationed in Turkey for the past nine months, and figured he would have to miss yet another one of his son’s birthdays. However, when he found out that he was going to have some leave time, he got on the first flight home, so that he could celebrate his son’s ninth birthday for the first time in years.

During the fourth inning of a Diamondbacks baseball game, Vickers snuck up behind his son Micah who was attending the game as his birthday present. “His reaction was priceless,” Vickers described. “It was hilarious to me, you know he was just like, dad?”

“I didn’t know what to expect, I just wanted to give him a moment that he’ll hopefully remember forever,” Vickers said. For now, Vickers only has a week with his son before being sent back to Turkey for another 6 months, but neither he nor Micah will ever forget the special moment. “Family is really important and it’s great to get to see them when you get to see them. It’s just…cherish the time you have with them.”
