Most able-bodied people don’t realize how fortunate they are to be able to do anything they want on their own, but for people with physical handicaps or disabilities, everyday life is full of challenges and obstacles that sometimes require some help.
When a man walked into a Cinco De Mayo Mexican Grill in Douglasville, Georgia, his server, Alex Ruiz, noticed there were bandages around his wrists, and he didn’t have any hands. When it came time to order, he asked if there was anyone who could help him eat the meal, and Ruiz didn’t think twice to help the man.
Another customer, Reginald Widener, was watching their interaction, and was speechless when he watched Ruiz sit down in the booth across from the man, and start feeding him. “So I’m at cinco de mayo and Alex (server) had a man come in with no hands. So Alex is now helping the man eat his lunch. This seriously hit me right in the soul,” Widener wrote alongside the picture he took, which has now gone viral.
“I said I would help … and from the bottom of my heart, I really wanted to help him,” 22-year-old Ruiz said. “I didn’t mean for it to cause a lot of attention … I just wanted to help.”
Ruiz sat with the man for 30 minutes while he made conversation with him and hand fed him his taco, rice, and beans. After the meal, he took the man’s money to the cashier and brought him back the change. Later, Ruiz went back to work like nothing had happened, but his coworkers we moved by what they had witnessed. “Everyone at work was telling him what a great guy he was. That’s just something you don’t see. A person feeding a stranger,” waitress Crystal Figueroa said.
