It can be hard to see the good in the world when all you see in the news are stories of devastation, hatred, and violence, and for many parents, it can be difficult to know that this is the world your child will have to grow up in.
To remind people that there are still good people in this world, one mystery hero from Salem, Oregon has been giving back to those who least expect it for the past few years by hiding $100 bills in grocery store and superstore items like diapers boxes, baby formula, children’s toys, and even cereal boxes.
The first mystery donation was discovered in May of 2013, and since then, the Salem-based newspaper The Statesman has been keeping track of the bills, which have bee nicknamed ‘Benny bills’ since the mystery hero only signs the name ‘Benny’ to the money, and estimates that he has donated $50,000 so far.
One mother of three, 23-year-old Brittany Medina, couldn’t believe it when she opened a container of baby formula and found the Benny bill last Christmas and allowed her to buy presents for the holiday. “Whoever does this for people is truly amazing,” she said. “He has blessed a lot of people.”
“Does it cure cancer and terrorism? No. However, it reminds me that there are good people in the world that want to make a difference,” Salem resident Jeff Phillips said.
