Every parent knows how fragile a newborn baby is and how weak their immune systems are, which is why it can be so terrifying for parents the first time their happy, healthy little baby catches a cold.
Considering colds can be agonizing for an adult with a fully developed immune system, you can imagine how bad it can be for an infant who can’t even express to mom and dad what hurts. However, children typically get eight or more colds a year, so it’s important to know exactly what to do when they happen to save your baby from unnecessary pain and save your sanity.
Take a look at the top 3 things every parent needs to do to help your baby get over a cold:
3. Be Prepared: Don’t wait until after your baby gets sick to go out and buy the necessary supplies since it’s nearly impossible to go shopping with a sick, fussy baby . Instead, stock up on infant pain and fever relief, saline drops, a thermometer, and possibly a humidifier. Sick babies also tend to feed more and need to keep fluids up, so be sure to always have extra stored breastmilk or baby formula.
2. Forget Routines: Encourage sleep whenever they can get it- even if it messes up nap and sleep schedules. Normally, it’s important to stick to regular sleeping times, however, when babies are sick it can be even harder for them to fall asleep and stay asleep at night, and not getting enough sleep will only wear the body out more.
1. Know When To Call For Help: While colds are never pleasant, you should be looking out for signs that your baby’s cold is developing into something more serious. If you start noticing your baby has difficulty breathing or strained breathing, unusually drowsy, has a temperature over 100.4 degrees, or a bulge on the soft spot of the head call the doctor immediately. And when your baby is sick, ALWAYS trust your intuition if something doesn’t feel right and get a second opinion if a doctor brushes off your concerns.
