Parents will do everything they can to protect their families from harm, which is why many moms and dads are choosing to use baby monitors and install security cameras in their homes.
Like other parents, Houston mom Jennifer thought having security cameras around the house would help keep her and her children safe, and let her keep an eye on her home even when she wasn’t there. However, this mom-of-three just learned the hard way that her security cameras have been doing more harm than good.
Since July 27, the private webcam that had been aimed at the beds of Jennifer’s twin 8-year-old daughters’ beds has been streaming online after hackers took over control and started live-streaming the footage for anyone on the internet to see.
“They’re in my house. People are watching my kids in their home, dressing, sleeping, playing,” Jennifer said. “They had [571] likes,” she said of the live stream, “so I know for a fact 571 people have been staring at my kids, probably more.”
Jennifer never would have realized that strangers were watching the family’s every move, but luckily another Oregon mom, Shelbie Ivy, spotted the concerning footage online and posted a picture of the footage to the Houston mothers’ Facebook group to track down and warn the family.
“I have cameras to protect my kids and I kind of feel like we failed them,” the mother said. “We didn’t protect them. We actually put them in harm’s way,” Jennifer said after taking down all the cameras in her home. “Never did I dream that they would be getting into our camera system, into our internet.”
