Every parent has heard horror stories about an otherwise gentle dog attacking a child that makes them question whether or not it’s safe to keep their dog once a baby arrives.
For a split second, one Tennessee dad, Bryan Holloway, wondered this very thing when he saw his Australian Shepherd named Shiloh jump up and lunge toward his 18-month-old baby boy who was playing in the grass in the backyard. However, those fears instantly disappeared when he saw what was at baby Bryson’s feet.
While Bryson had been playing in the grass, a venomous Copperhead snake had slithered towards him, and was about to bite him when Shiloh stepped in to protect the little boy. “It dawned on me that he literally grabbed that snake from the feet near the baby’s foot,” Bryan said.
Bryan killed the snake, but Shiloh had already been bitten on the lip and his neck started swelling up. “I honestly don’t think he would be here and I really don’t think we could have made it to the hospital and even if we did, best case scenario would have been a 50/50 fighting chance.” said Bryson’s mom, Alicia Holloway.
Bryan and Alicia treated Shiloh with some Benadryl and Amoxicillin before rushing him to the vet, and Shiloh is now thankfully doing much better.
“(Shiloh) loves those boys more than anything in this world,” Alicia said. “He’s very protective. He’s a very loving, affectionate dog. I know now he will not let anything happen to those boys.”
