Parents are often warned about how easily small children can choke on food, which is why so many parents buy baby snacks that are made to easily dissolve to prevent choking. However, one Canadian dad learned the hard way that even these baby-friendly snacks can be a choking hazard to children.
On August 21, Justine Morrice decided to give his 9-month-old daughter Annabelle a handful of Gerber’s “Lil’ Crunchies P’tits croquants” as a dessert after finishing her snack. He then turned away to wash his daughter’s dirty plate, but when he turned around no more than 10 seconds later, he was stunned to see his baby girl gasping for air.
“She was trying to cry but no sound was coming out….I rushed over and picked her up and turned her over and slapped her back(as we were taught) for what seemed like forever I still could not hear anything. I flipped her over and her lips had turned blue and she was still trying to cry,” Morrice wrote in a Facebook post, which has since gone viral.
After a few more failed attempts, Morrice panicked and stuck his finger down his baby girl’s throat to dislodge the cheese puff. “The next thing I heard was the sweetest sound in the world…her crying. I flipped her over again and slapped her back and with the force of her crying it became dislodged and I was able to sweep it with my finger out of her mouth. It was the longest and scariest min of my life,” he said.
Morrice was relieved Annabelle was fine, but he couldn’t stop thinking about why she had such a hard time eating the cheese snack today, when just a few days before she ate them without a problem.
“After scanning the can my mom found this “warning” in tiny letters on their side to throw contents out after 5 days of breaking the seal,” Morrice wrote. “I opened a new container and I could not believe the difference. The ones in the can she choked on I can only describe to be like a foam ear plug. I could squish it but it would expand back out and would not break apart. The ones in the new can crumbled with ease.”
“Again this is not a post to degrade Gerber in anyway. So many products post warning labels but unless u scan the product you can get ‘lazy’ as parents and it becomes routine,” said Morrice, who is hoping his message will help parents avoid a very dangerous situation.”This is just a warning to all parents…read the labels!”
