At eight days old, most newborn babies are swaddled up and relaxing in their comfy cribs at home, but these newborn twins, are recovering in the hospital from a surgery that had a 1 percent chance of success.

The triplets were born eight weeks early in the Inselspital hospital in Bern, the capital of Switzerland, and two of the three babies, Lydia and Maya, were conjoined at the liver and the chest.

Originally, doctors planned on waiting until the girls were a few months older to attempt the surgery, which can be risky in an of itself. Yet, Lydia and Maya were facing a life-threatening condition that forced doctors to separate them as soon as possible.

Because one of the twins had too much blood and very high blood pressure, and the other did not have enough blood, the surgery had to happen immediately. At just eight days old, the girls underwent surgery with a 99% chance of failure.

Thanks to a team of 13 doctors and nurses, the five hours surgery was a success, and Lydia and Maya became the youngest conjoined twins to successfully be separated.

“The perfect teamwork of physicians and nursing personnel from various disciplines were the key to success here. We are very happy that the children and parents are faring so well now,” head of paediatric surgery Steffen Berger said.

Meerkats are curious creatures native to the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa, and true to form, these newborn meerkat pups are curiously exploring the new world around them.

On January 7th, two meerkat pups were born at Sydney’s Taronga Zoo for the first time in seven years. However, these furry little creatures have just started venturing out of the warmth and comfort of their nest to explore the exciting world around them.

“This is all new for them and they learn by observing their mum and dad, so we’re very lucky that Nairobi and Maputo are proving to be fantastic and attentive first-time parents,” said Courtney Mahony, a keeper at the meerkat exhibit. “Nairobi is letting the pups suckle and grooming them at the right times and Maputo protects them, huddles over them and curls up with them at night.”

“They were initially a little wary of this big new world outside, but with a bit of encouragement from mum and dad they started to explore,” Courtney said.

Now, the young babies are starting to show their curious sides, and already have their own personalities. “Our male is the bigger of the two and he’s more adventurous and inquisitive, while the female is quieter and prefers to stay close to mum,” Courtney said.

When this adorably confused dog named Hank finds a perfect stick while on an afternoon walk and swim in the pond with his patient owner, he is determined to bring his favorite new toy home with him.

Unfortunately, there’s a pesky fence in the way of his plans, and Hank nearly has to leave the stick behind. Before giving up, however, Hank decided to try plan b, which is to use brute force to get his beloved stick through the wooden fence. After a few tugs, he finally manages to get the stick through the fence and his proud face is priceless.

When doctors found a golf ball-sized cancerous tumor right below 4-year-old George Rios’ brain, everyone was crushed at his terminal diagnosis, but what crushed the little boy the most was the thought that he’d never get to live out his dream of becoming a soldier in the K9 unit in the U.S. Army.

Five years later, the now 9-year-old George is still fighting his terminal illness, and to honor his fight, the U.S. army is making his dreams come true by officially making George an honorary K9 dog handler, and giving the tough fighter his first mission.

This past December, George was sworn in as an Army K9 handler, and recently the U.S. military, Lancaster PetSmart, LA County Sheriff, and For Veterans Sake Foundation came together to create a scenario where George and his Golden Retriever partner Katie would sniff out a suspicious package to save the day.

George and Katie passed their mission with flying colors and the young Sgt. couldn’t contain his smile.

“He’s fighting his own battle, so what he’s doing, he’s giving us hope and a lot of the veterans that we work with, when they see a little man like this, that only wants to be a veteran himself, it’s gonna give ‘em a light, and something for them to strive for,” Monty Hudson of For Veterans Sake told KTLA 5.

It’s hard to find someone who’s willing to give up every last penny they’ve ever saved to help someone else, yet when 4-year-old Camden Hand heard one of the teachers at his pre-school was having trouble paying for her cancer treatment, he didn’t think twice to give everything he had.

Over the years, Camden has been dropping in all of his birthday money and loose change into a piggy bank, and managed to save up $105.15. When he heard Betty Payne, one of the teachers at the Good Samaritan Academy preschool in Tallahassee, Florida, was sick with stage 3 lung cancer and struggling to pay the health insurance deductable for her treatments, he got his piggy bank out and asked for dad’s help opening it up.

“He started dumping it out onto the table and he looked up at me and said, ‘How much does Ms. Betty need?'” mom Christie Hand said. “And I said she needs an awful lot, and he said, ‘I have a lot here. She can have it.’ He knew someone was in need and he thought he could help and that was that.”

After counting all the money, Camden put every last cent in a plastic bag and brought it in to school to donate.

“I couldn’t help but to cry,” Payne said. “That this kid, he gave up everything he had for me. That showed me he had a lot of love and goodness in his heart. You don’t find too many kids who want to give up their money.”

So far, 100 families from the school have raised $2,400 for treatments and other expenses, and have even started a Go Fund Me donation page in her honor.

Raccoons are usually known for being mischievous and naughty, but this tiny raccoon is proving that even they have a sweet and caring side for the people they love.

In the video, this precious 4-year-old petite raccoon named Melanie shows off her caring side after she lovingly takes care of her sick mom. She may have four furry paws and stand at about nine inches tall, but her training has made her a perfect nurse for the person who cared for her since she was just 8-weeks-old.

As soon as mom sneezes, Melanie is there to grab a tissue for her, and lovingly offer it to her so she can wipe her runny nose.

The clever 4-year-old knows her good deed can get her a yummy treat, and she adorably puts her hands together as she eagerly awaits her snack.

When employees arrived at work at the Marine Room in San Diego, they were expecting to start their normal morning prep for the customers that would be arriving later on, but were shocked to see they already had a guest resting in one of their booths.

Rather than finding a human, workers found a malnourished sea lion pup sleeping in one of the booths overlooking the ocean “almost like she wanted to have dinner,” Executive Chef Bernard Guillas told Reuters. And when the staff called a SeaWorld rescue team, they could tell the tiny baby was underweight and dehydrated.

The pup must have wandered up from the beach and snuck into the restaurant when a cleaning crew left the door open, and SeaWorld officials explained that the sea lion pup was seeking warmth, higher ground, and food like many other sea lions who end up stranded on land because of high tides and warm El Nino waters that have destroyed their food supply this season.

After the rescue team brought the starving pup, who weighed less than half the normal weight for its age at just 20 pounds, back to SeaWorld for care and a good meal.

The pup is now getting the care she desperately needed, and despite being found lethargic, severely underweight, and with a swollen left eye, the team said they were “cautiously optimistic” she would recover and eventually be released back into the wild.

Many people like having a big house with a permanent address to come home to, but many other people are realizing the appeal of having a mobile, and much tinier house to call home.

In 2014, Jordan Grigg decided to quit his full-time corporate job for a job as a professional golfer. Because he’d be moving around so much for tournaments, Jordan and his wife Brittany decided a 276-square-foot tiny home on wheels would be more suitable for their new nomadic life.

After some searching, the couple found the perfect camper that was light enough to tow yet tall enough to accommodate Jordan’s 6’5″ height. The only problem, however, was that the inside was dated, cramped, and wasn’t very inviting.

To make it feel more like a real home, the couple spent three months renovating the camper. “We started by taking down all the flooring and carpet, window coverings and original couch,” she told TODAY. “We painted everything white — it really brightened up the entire space, and made it feel much bigger than with the warm tones before.”

The camper got new floors, pillows, seat covers, and curtains to brighten up the space, and brought in a custom pantry and desk, as well as plenty of extra storage to utilize the small camper.

“We wanted to make sure we’d be staying really functional even with a lot less stuff. There’s not as much space, but it forces us to only keep what’s important and needed,” Brittany said.

With some patient and persistence, this owner was able to use his iPad with an electronic keyboard to teach his yellow Labrador puppy named Ben to play a few notes with his little paws and snout.

Ben makes great progress during his evening lesson, but he is still just a puppy, and can’t help but get easily distracted by the television playing in the background!

Humans might not be natural predators of Elephants, yet we are the main reason elephants are considered vulnerable and endangered today with elephant poaching for ivory and habitat destruction.

So when this mother was crossing the road in the Kruger National Park in South Africa with her baby and saw a group of tourists nearby, she was understandably untrusting of the group. Luckily, the tourists were completely harmless and just looking to see a few animals wandering the park, but this careful mom made sure her baby stayed safe.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes, but this traffic cop proves to be a true hero as he selflessly jumps into oncoming traffic to rescue a tiny animal after spotting something in the middle of the road.

After spotting a tiny animal on the pavement, this traffic cop knows if he doesn’t act quick, the animal would most likely be killed. He doesn’t hesitate and immediately jumps into the busy road and stop traffic to scoop up the baby animal who was frozen with fear.

This incredible police officer spotted something in the middle of the road, and jumped in front of speeding cars and a bus to rescue the tiny animal who was seconds from being run over.

As he got closer, the cop realized the tiny animal was a terrified white kitten who had wandered into the street. After picking the creature up off the road, the kitten snuggled up to him

The odds may have been stacked against this little trooper, but Alby the tenacious baby turtle shocked everyone with his unique coloring and determination for making it all the way to the ocean.

Alby was just one of the 122 baby turtles from his nest, yet was left behind when all his brothers and sisters hatched days earlier and made their way to the ocean. Volunteers from the Coolum and North Shore Coast Care group went to check the nest a few days later to collect data, but spotted the straggler laying on his back in the sand at the bottom of the nest.

The volunteer environmental group have been monitoring the beaches where Alby was born for 9 years, yet he was the first albino Green turtle the group had ever seen at the site. In fact, albino turtles only occur every once in hundreds of thousands of eggs.

Green turtle hatchlings have their work cut out for them as it is with predators and habitat loss, but this unique baby has an even tougher road ahead. “Normally they don’t survive coming out of the nest, and when they do, they’re abnormal and not well suited to the environment,” said Dr. Col Limpus.

Despite the odds being low for the baby turtle to make it out of the nest, Alby looked strong as he managed to crawl all the way to the water to begin his journey from his birthplace to the continental shelf.

After this dog fell down an old 100 foot well, he was trapped without food or water for hours as no one could come up with a way to safely remove him without getting trapped as well.

Rather than give up, volunteers from Animal Aid Unlimited, a rescue centre, hospital and sanctuary for sick and homeless animals in India, worked tirelessly to find a way to rescue the trapped dog. “Rocks broke off and crumbled when we tested them to see if we could safely lower our rescuer, Ganpat,” the organization wrote in a post on their Facebook. “We tried to approach from every angle before deciding it was just too dangerous to descend by rope. So we drove across the city and hired a crane to come to assist the rescue.”

Because of the crumbling walls of the well, the rescue team couldn’t risk lowering someone down with a rope, so the team had to get creative to think of a solution. Eventually, they were able to get a crane and tie a makeshift harness to lower someone down and rescue the dog.

The dog was clearly frightened as it cowered in the corner of the well, but transformed after he was rescued and fed a good meal. Rather than cowering from people, the dog was loving all the attention, and his couldn’t stop smiling.

Babies are able to recognize their parents within days of being born, but a little boy named Reed is having some trouble figuring out who his real father is after meeting Dad’s identical twin.

In his defense, however, Stephen and his twin brother Michael have the same haircut, clothing style, and similar reading glasses, which makes it nearly impossible to tell the difference.

In the video, the two brothers can’t help themselves as they completely confuse Reed by handing him back and forth and taking off their glasses.

Baby Reed was sure he was being held in dad’s arms, but then he turns around to see another person who looked just like dad. When asked who the person was the baby confidently answers that it’s ‘dada’.

Yet once in ‘dada’s’ hands, baby Reed has second thoughts, and instead decides that the man across from him was in fact his dad.

Cats are incredibly observant and curious creatures, so when this clever cat named Neufie saw his owner using the toilet instead of the litter box to go to the bathroom, he figured he’d give the funny contraption a try.

In the video, this cat owner was confused when he heard someone in his bathroom, but knew that he was the only one home. Once he went to investigate, he found his ginger cat crouching over the toilet and actually using it for the bathroom instead of the litter box! While Neufie has perfectly mastered peeing in the toilet, he still has a ways to go until he learns to flush after himself.

We all know fast food is bad for our health, but it seems every year something new comes out that shows just how unhealthy it actually is.

Over a six-year experiment, this mother and chiropractor named Jennifer Lovdahl began an experiment to show people how bad fast food actually was for you, yet even she did not expect these results.

Rather than break down and mold like any unprocessed food without preservatives, the four chicken nuggets and fries, which were purchased in 2010, had barely changed at all after all that time.

Six years ago, Jennifer Lovdahl decided to start an experiment to see how long it would take for a McDonald’s Happy Meal to mold or decompose. The food sat untouched with the original cardboard box at her Balanced Health Chiropractic office in Anchorage, Alaska.

“It’s been 6 years since I bought this “Happy Meal” at McDonald’s. It’s been sitting at our office this whole time and has not rotted, molded, or decomposed at all!!! It smells only of cardboard,” Lovdahl wrote in a post to Facebook.

The receipt is clearly dated from Jan. 8, 2010, and the cardboard box and receipt have disintegrated far more than the food has.  “We did this experiment to show our patients how unhealthy this “food” is. Especially for our growing children!! There are so many chemicals in this food! Choose real food! Apples, bananas, carrots, celery….those are real fast food,” Lovdahl explained.

Your wedding day is supposed to be the best day of your life, yet even after months of planning, something always seems to go wrong.

While Nesh Pillay, the bride-to-be, was getting her hair styled just before her wedding in a salon in New York City, a 330-ton crane collapsed, and crushed the pavement below. “Very quickly, everyone in the salon was a little nervous, a little scared, no one knew what happened. It was terrifying, it was very sad,” Pillay said.

Despite being dressed and ready for her wedding, Pillay had no way of getting to the intimate ceremony in time as the officiant could not wait any longer for her.

Yet when FDNY Chaplain Ann Kansfield saw the shivering bride stranded in the sleet, she knew she had to step in and help by offering her warm firefighting coat and walking the bride to her wedding.

“While the chaplain was walking me over in the freezing cold, the snow, in the slush with heels, while she was walking us over, I said, ‘Wait, a chaplain. You can marry us?’ She was like, ‘Yeah, I can.’ So I said, ‘Would you marry us?'” Pillay said. After walking the bride to the courthouse, Kansfield married the young couple in an impromptu ceremony on the courthouse steps.

Fitting in at school can be tough for anyone who’s a little bit different, but rather than tease, bully, or make fun of this six-year-old because of his disability, these kids came together to do something inspiring for their deaf classmate.

Zejd Coralic found it impossible to interact with his classmates or make friends because his hearing disability made communicating with other kids extremely difficult. To try to help the situation, school teacher Sanela Ljumanovic decided to teach the entire class sign language so Zejd would never feel left out.

In just three months since starting their sign language lessons, all of the first graders at the Osman Nakas primary school in Bosnia have learned the basics, which has made a huge difference in making the classroom more inclusive for Zejd.

Aside from helping Zejd make friends, the teacher explained that the lessons were also making the students more open and sensitive to others with disabilities.

“We are all happy as we are learning a new language. The goal, however, is also to teach Zejd to read lips … he is a good kid, a smart kid,” she said.

Dogs might be famous for being man’s best friend, but that bond pales in comparison to the bond they form with their newborn brothers and sisters. In fact, they are often so protective of their new siblings that they protect them and treat them like their own baby.

When mom laid her newborn son down for a nap on a soft blanket, her tiny black and tan miniature pinscher pup stepped in to make sure her little brother was completely covered with his plush blanket, and would not stop nudging the blanket with her snout until he was completely covered.

While these newborn baby penguin hatchlings haven’t even opened their eyes yet, they have no problem recognizing that they are siblings as they are introduced to each other for the first time since being outside of their cozy eggs.

The two African penguin chicks, which have yet to be named as their gender has not been determined, were born at the Dallas Zoo on Jan. 28 and Feb. 1 to proud parents Tulip and Tazo who have been splitting their parenting duties equally.

At their first weigh-ins, the two fluffy hatchlings weighed just 2.5 ounces, and while they will grow quickly, they won’t start swimming with mom and dad until they are around 3.5 months old.

When the staff placed the two penguin chicks down to meet each other for the first time, they had no trouble recognizing each other and immediately cuddled up to each other and gave each other an adorable hug.
