They’ve Been Married For 68 Happy Years, But Their Kids Are Stunned When They Find These In The Attic

Many couples hang on to small mementos like cards or photographs that remind them of the happy times they’ve spent together, but this 91-year-old woman’s kids were shocked to find their mother had held on to every single box of chocolates she had ever gotten from their dad for Valentine’s Day.

Every year since the couple met, 93-year-old Bud Shurson made sure to treat his wife Phyllis to a heart-shaped box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day. Even when Bud was on the road as a truck driver, he always found a way to get the chocolates home to his wife.

“I knew he’d remember, because he always did,” Phyllis said about her husband, who once even paid a drug store owner to mail the box home for him.

When they first met, Bud was just returning home from serving as an airman in WWII and Phyllis was just starting out her nursing career alongside Bud’s sister, who introduced them. “She says I’ve got a good looking girl down here working with me.  She said, ‘You’ll want to come down and meet her.’  Well my sister didn’t lie any,” Bud explained with a smile.

The boxes, which are a testament to their long marriage, were found in pristine condition and were taking up a considerable part of the attic. “I didn’t have the heart to throw them away,” Phyllis explained.

How would you cope if the entire life you built suddenly disappeared in just a week? When this dairy farmer lost her vision after suffering from a complication from her diabetes, she became depressed and didn’t know how she could live without her vision.

Luckily, her incredibly loving husband named Mr. Kuroki found a way to show his newly blind wife that her disability didn’t mean her new life had to be joyless.

Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki moved to rural Japan to run a dairy farm together after they were married in 1956, and lived happily together as they raised their two children. But after losing her sight in just a week, Mrs. Kuroki stopped going outside and withdrew from her family.

While on a shopping trip to the Hueytown Food Giant to pick up food, one 48-year-old police officer was stunned when he noticed a 19-year-old employee’s shoes were being held together with just a few pieces of duct tape.

At first, Goldman thought the duct taped shoes might have been intentional as they boy helped him load groceries in the torrential rain. “I looked at him and said, ‘What’s up with duct tape? Is that something all the kids are doing? A fashion statement?”

But then the teenager explained that he had split them at work and was waiting for his next paycheck to buy new shoes.

This struck a chord with Goldman, and couldn’t stop thinking about the situation after he thanked the boy for helping him bring his bags to the car in the pouring rain. “I didn’t know if he had to walk home in the rain or what,” Goldman said. After delivering the food he had just purchased to the jail, he went out and bought a pair of shoes and returned to the grocery store.

After asking for the boy, the officer handed him the brand new pair of shoes. “I said, ‘Man, here you go. I didn’t know payday was Friday or two weeks from now,”’ Goldman said. “He said, ‘What do I owe you?’ and I told him to just pay it forward.”

“I hope people take from it that the police aren’t really bad. We’ve been getting such a bad rap in the news,” Goldman explained after people started taking notice of his good deed. “We’re human beings with families and kids and loved ones.”

Would you have done anything for this teenager whose shoes were falling apart? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and please SHARE this inspiring story with friends and family on Facebook.

Zara Al Shaikh may look like your typical rebellious 13-year-old with her wild blue hair, but she’s way tougher than appearances let on.

When Zara was just 11 years old, she was originally diagnosed with leukemia. Within a year, her cancer had gone into remission, but now, the 13-year-old from Hampshire, United Kingdom got the news from her doctors that her cancer had returned. In order to survive, Zara needs to find a bone marrow donor. However, her father, Dr. Loua Al Shaikh, explained that finding a match was going to be difficult as his daughter has mixed Arabic and English ancestry.

In order to survive, Zara needs to find a bone marrow donor. However, her father, Dr. Loua Al Shaikh, explained that finding a match was going to be difficult as his daughter has mixed Arabic and English ancestry.

“It’s just a few days ago when Zara and I were sitting in hospital and we looked at these social media things online,” Al Shaikh told ABC News, which is when he and his daughter came up with the idea to “post something out there and someone might grab it.” Zara then started Twitter and Facebook accounts and a website from her hospital bed to encourage people to register as stem cell or bone marrow donors.

While Zara has still not found a match, the original post to Twitter saying “I urgently need a bone marrow transplant. I have a very rare tissue type due to mixed ethnicity (Arabic/British). Pls help me find a match” has been shared more than 12,000 times and her hashtag #Match4Zara has gone viral.

Since Zara’s tweet went viral, an official from one bone marrow registry reported that there had been a “twelve fold” increase in people signing up in just one day. “People are answering the call, so social media is doing its thing,” he told ABC News. “These are regular folk and it makes you believe in humanity.”

Firefighters Spotted This In A Steep Ravine, But When They Got To The Bottom They Were Horrified

While baby horses weigh between 100-200 pounds when born, they still need to spend a considerable amount of time with their mother or a caretaker. So when this days-old baby horse was left all alone in the Morrison Canyon in Fremont, California, he quickly got himself into some trouble.

After spotting the weak and injured baby at the bottom of a steep ravine, firefighters immediately rappelled to the bottom to rescue him. The baby, which the first responders later named ‘Valentine‘ because he was rescued on the holiday, discovered the horse had been there for about two days and had broken his pelvis.

At first, the Fremont Police and Tri-City Animal Shelter believed Valentine’s severe injuries, which included a broken pelvis and rib, would require surgery. In order to raise the money, someone started a Go Fund Me page to fund the surgery to begin Valentine’s long rehabilitation journey.

But after the UC Davis team examined Valentine, they determined surgery would not be needed, but would still need to stay at the hospital as he is susceptible to other infections and still needs time to heal.

“We are very appreciative to everyone who donated via Go Fund Me for Valentine’s hospital bills. In total, more than 200 donations were received and almost $16,000 was raised. We were told by UC Davis that the total cost for his care will be about that amount,” The Fremont Police Department wrote in an update to their Facebook.

Careless Tourists Pluck A Baby Dolphin Out Of The Water For A Picture: What Happens Next Is Disgraceful

People are obsessed with documenting every moment and capturing the perfect selfie to show off their adventures, but it turns out this ‘harmless’ obsession has just cost a defenseless baby animal its life.

When tourists at the Santa Teresita beach resort near Buenos Aires spotted a baby Franciscana dolphin near the shore, they plucked it out of the water and passed it around to take pictures with until it eventually died.

Like most other aquatic animals, the Franciscana dolphin, which is currently facing the threat of extinction with only 30,000 left, can’t survive out of the water. “The Franciscana, like other dolphins, can not long remain above water. It has a very thick and greasy skin that provides warmth, so the weather will quickly cause dehydration and death,” environmentalist group Vida Silvestre said.

“It was just a baby, an incredible animal which had the misfortune of running into the worst kind of mammals — humans,” witness Ayelén Rodriguez said.  She tried to get everyone to stop touching the baby dolphin and return it back to the water, but no one would listen.

After a few minutes out of the water and unprotected from the strong sun, the tiny Franciscan dolphin died lying on the sand. One man attempted to resuscitate it, but it was too late to help.

Soldiers risk their lives to ensure everyone back home can have a good life free of fear and violence, which is why this decorated war veteran was shocked when a group of five young thugs approached him and claimed he was racist.

When Chris Marquez, an Iraq war hero, was eating a burger at a McDonald’s in Washington D.C., a group of teenagers approached him and asked him what he thought of Black Lives Matter. “I felt threatened and thought they were trying to intimidate me, so I figured I’m just going to keep to my food, eat my food, and hopefully they’ll leave me alone. And because I wasn’t responding back to them, they were calling me a racist,” Marquez said.

During his time in Iraq, Marquez was awarded the Bronze Star for valor after rescuing four Marines from firefight. “When I was in the Marine Corps, I served with people from many different backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and races,” Marquez said. “Like all Marines, I fought for the freedom of all Americans and not just one particular group.” Which is why he was stunned when his attackers accused him of being racist.

But when he didn’t respond to their questions, the thugs began beating him and knocked him unconscious. The teens then stole the Marquez’s wallet and used his credit card at Walmart, Five Guys, and a liquor store.

“As soon as I walked out of the McDonald’s I got hit in the back of the head, or the side of the head,’ he told WJLA. ‘I just dropped to the ground, and [the McDonald’s manager] says I looked unconscious.”

People like to imagine the amazing ways they would spend their winnings if they ever won the lottery or came into some unexpected money, but when this single mother of three won $200 from a scratch-off ticket, she knew immediately how she would spend it.

After finding out that she had a winning ticket, Sofia Lorena noticed a homeless man standing in the -8-degree weather as she was driving in her town of New Bedford, Mass. “He was holding a homeless sign his hands shook and he was crying as the negative degree wind whipped his face. I rolled down my window and offered to buy him coffee which he was hesitant but grateful to accept,” Lorena wrote in a post to her Facebook.

As Lorena drove Glenn to Dunkin Donuts, she found out that he didn’t know where he’d be sleeping that night. She checked the nearest homeless shelters within 10 miles for availability, but when everything was full, she knew she could use her winnings for a room in an Inn.

“I’ve never seen a grown man cry he began praying and telling me I was an angel. If anyone was an extra warm outfit or warm leftovers and want to donate to him he’s in room 16. I know how grateful he would be,” she wrote.

Nobody Wanted This Baby With Down Syndrome: What This Family Of 5 Does Next Will Bring You To Tears

When adoption agency CatholicCare was having trouble finding a home for a 15-month-old baby boy with Down syndrome who had spent his entire life in foster care, they turned to a Facebook group for parents who had kids wth Down syndrome as a last resort.

As soon as Emma saw Daniel’s picture on the page, which she joined as she and her husband Peter raised her 12-year-old son Ethan who was born with Down syndrome,  she felt a connection to the little boy and started thinking about adding to her already crowded family of seven.

Despite having their plates full with raising Ethan and their four other children, Emma and Peter knew they wanted to expand their family, and had always talked about adopting. “There are so many kids that need a home and we’ve got lots of love to give, I know we have,” Peter said.

13 years ago, Emma was pregnant with the couple’s fifth child, and doctors found out Ethan had Down syndrome right before the delivery.  Yet Emma was just relieved that her baby was otherwise healthy.

“A friend of mine growing up had a sister with Down syndrome, and it’s never been an issue in my life, they were just people and everybody’s different. It’s not something that we expected to be a part of our lives, but it is a big part of our lives and I guess for all of us, we wouldn’t be who we are today without Ethan in our lives.

When Emma spotted Daniel on Facebook, she questioned if they could handle having him. Together, they decided to go ahead with the adoption since they always intended on expanding the family. “When Giesel called us and gave us the news, the elation from me was like being told I was pregnant again. It was overwhelming, that love, it was just amazing,” Emma said.

Daniel has only been with the family for a short time, but he has bonded so well with the family that it feels as though he’s been there since day one. “We’ll just do what we’ve done for all the other kids – we’ll follow his lead, and whatever he needs we try and pre-empt it and make sure that he’s got the best start that we can give him.”

Mom Of Newborn Triplets Tries Breast Pumping On The Plane, But What Flight Attendants Do Next Will Stun You

As if breastfeeding three hungry newborn triplets wasn’t already a challenge, this mom was struggling to not miss a breast-pumping session while also staying discreet in her cramped coach seat on a Delta flight.

Yet when two flight attendants spotted Jenna on a flight from Atlanta to Dallas with her breast pumping gear, they offered her an empty first class seat instead of scolding her to cover up and use the bathroom.

“As a breastfeeding mother to triplets, it’s important that I not miss a breast-pumping session, especially when traveling. Yesterday, two flight attendants, Kaitlin K and Loretta, on my flight from Atlanta to Dallas-Love Field, allowed me to sit in an empty first class seat for more space and privacy while I pumped in flight,” Jenna wrote in a post to Delta’s Facebook page that has now been liked over 56,000 times.

“Initially, I was completely overwhelmed by the shares and responses to my post but have since embraced the opportunity to advocate for the parent,” Jenna said. “If even one mother is more comfortable feeding her child because of my post, then it makes the overwhelming response worth it.”

“They offered me snacks and provided TONS of water during my pumping session. Additionally, on my return flight this afternoon, the Dallas-Love Field gate attendant, Talesa, offered me an empty first-class seat so I could do the same,” Jenna wrote.

“Our children have to eat and we should never apologize for that,” Jenna told ABC News. “This is an opportunity to recognize Delta’s role in supporting the parent’s decision-making and bringing a new reality to fruition.”

When most people laid eyes on the 88-square-foot brick boiler room that was for sale in San Francisco, they thought nothing could be done with the miniature space. But when designer and architect Christi Azevedo spotted the property, she saw all of its potential.

The old brick building, which was part of a former French hand laundry, needed some renovating and updating to make it livable. As soon as Christi saw it, she knew she would be able to turn it into a full-service guest apartment with all the amenities of a larger home.

“The entire place was a wreck, but there were loads of details remaining,” Christi told Today.com about her ‘Brick House’.

The cozy living room has a couch and a table where people can hang out comfortably, and if more space is needed, there are fold-out cushions that can be placed on top of the staircase landing for more seating.

The kitchen area is again the far wall and features plenty of storage space in the custom cabinets, a stainless steel countertop, a large sink, and a stove top.

Now Christi uses the apartment whenever she’s staying in San Fransisco, where the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment costs about $3,500 a month. When she’s elsewhere, Christi manages to rent the space out for $1,600 a month, which is a steal for the area.

Firefighters routinely risk their lives for people and animals they’ve never met, and will most likely never see again. Despite the risk, however, they always are willing to put others’ safety ahead of their own when they know they are making a difference.

When firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene of a burning apartment building in Koreatown, they managed to rescue a woman who was stuck in her wheelchair, and an unresponsive bulldog named Potato.

Potato was unconscious and unable to breathe when firemen found him on the floor in the apartment where the fire had started. After carrying him outside, the determined firefighters gave him oxygen, water, and gently pat his stomach until he was revived.

This Half-Frozen Bunny Was Going To Be Killed, But They Made Something Incredible So He Could Live

The time of year in which a baby animal is born can make all the difference for a newborn’s  chance of survival and health, so when a litter of baby bunnies was born in the frigid upstate New York winter, they had everything working against them.

Since baby bunnies are born furless and blind, they need extra care and protection until they can move around on their own. When Overlook Acres, a farm in upstate New York, found a litter of bunnies freezing in their barn, they took them inside to warm and bottle feed each one.

One of the bunnies who they later named Wheels was freezing from the waist down caught their eye. “I found this little guy in the barn stiff and half frozen and brought him inside,” Overlook Acres said. “After a few days of warmth, he was eating normal but wasn’t moving his back legs. It appeared he was paralyzed from his belly down.”

“Normally this circumstance would result in putting the animals down and out of his misery but he didn’t seem to be in any pain,” Overlook Acres wrote in a post to Facebook. “He managed to still pull himself around the floor and was moving faster than the other babies.”

While the baby bunny seemed to be able to get around fine by dragging his little body, he would need a way to drag himself around that wouldn’t risk infections and injuries if he was on a ragged surface.

“So, Christine took it upon herself to buy a $1 skateboard toy at the dollar store and manufacture a mini wheelchair body for this little guy. He is as happy as can be and loves his speed.”

When Flossie Dickey, a resident at a Washington senior home, turned 110 years old, she was ‘not one bit’ happy about the occasion and being interviewed about it. “How do you think you’d feel if you were 110?” Flossie said to interviewer Nichole Mischke.

During the interview, Flossie was less than thrilled to have a camera in her face, but revealed that she enjoys taking naps whenever she can. “I am tired. I take a nap as many times as I can,” the great-great-grandmother said.

As if there weren’t already enough reasons to indulge in some decadent chocolate, a new study is proving there’s another incredible reason you should being eating this sweet treat.

According to a study published in the journal Appetite, researchers studied the data that had been collected that measured people’s dietary intake and measured cognitive function and found an interesting link between chocolate consumption and brain functions.

Surprisingly, they found that the people who ate chocolate more frequently performed better on a series of tests compared to people who did not eat chocolate.  “More frequent chocolate consumption was significantly associated with better performance on (tests, including) visual-spatial memory and organization, working memory, scanning and tracking, abstract reasoning and the mini-mental state examination,” researchers said. They even suggest that eating chocolate regularly could help prevent the natural cognitive decline that occurs with age.

We’ve long known about the connection and effects food has on our bodies and mind, as previous research proves chocolate can reduce fevers, treat diarrhea in children, encourage sleep, clean teeth, decrease PMS symptoms, and increase breast-milk production.

However, before you go out and stock your shelves with your favorite chocolate bars, you should know these benefits only occur when eating dark chocolate, which is higher in flavonoids, instead of milk or white chocolate.

Take a look at the video below to find out more about your favorite treat that just got a little bit sweeter!

Military animals risk their lives to serve their country just like any soldier, so when they retire, they too deserve to be looked after and cared for instead of becoming homeless and neglected.

Caisson horses Quincy and Kennedy are highly trained horses who served in the Army’s Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. For eight hours each day, every other week, these two helped bring home America’s fallen soldiers by pulling their coffins during their at Arlington. However, now Quincy and Kennedy are retired and are looking for suitable homes.

“These guys did their service,” Staff Sgt. David Smith said. “It’s their time to be a horse.”

“I think one of the reasons to own a horse like Quincy or Kennedy is to have a piece in this mission,” Pfc. Kris Loudner, one of the caisson riders, said. “In a way, you’re tending to a horse that has honored America’s service members.”

Soldiers put their life on the line, and are willing to sacrifice everything to protect loved ones and total strangers alike. Yet in January 2015, there were nearly 50,000 homeless veterans across America on any given night.

Veterans are at an increased risk of homelessness since they can have difficulty transitioning back into normal civilian life, especially if they’ve experienced traumatic injuries or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Thankfully, the percentage of homeless veterans have been dropping since communities and states across the country have begun working to end homelessness in the group that deserves to be respected and cared for, not forgotten.

Over the past few years, the percentage of homeless veteran has dropped, and now Connecticut has just become the second state after Virginia to officially end veteran homelessness for good.

“We signed on in 2014 that we would end homelessness amongst veterans by the end of last year,” Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy said. “And we did it.”

To officially end homelessness for veterans, Connecticut now is able to find housing for any future homeless vets within 90 days, and has more veterans exiting homelessness than entering. This program ensures that future cases of homeless veterans are “rare, brief, and non-recurring.”

A nurse might be a complete stranger, but they’re the people who are there for you every step of the way in both the happiest and hardest moments in your life.

As a little girl, Brittany Ellard Perryman’s mother, Dawn, used to tell her the story of her birth at the Brookwood Hospital in 1990, and the angel nurse who helped her in the most painful yet most incredible moment.

“She was terrified,” Brittany said, “…but it was all okay, because Daphney was there. She was an angel to my mom, and mom said she wouldn’t have made it without Daphney.”

Dawn remembers how her nurse, Daphney Jones Walker, saved the day by caring for her and never leaving her as no family members were at the hospital when Brittany was finally born.

25 years later, Brittany arrived at the same hospital she was born in to give birth to her daughter Caroline. When Daphney heard Brittany was in the hospital, she came to see Brittany and told her she would be staying with her to deliver her daughter.

When Dawn walked into the room, she was stunned to see Daphney sitting with her daughter. “I said, ‘Mom I have a surprise for you!’ and then Daphney turned around and my mom knew immediately who it was,” Brittany said.

Brittany later turned to Facebook to recount the incredible moment and thank Daphney and nurses who work so tirelessly for their patients. “I want her to have evidence of all the lives she has touched… I know a lot of nurses shadow her, and I want them to see that if you take care of and love your patients, you can change their lives,” Brittany wrote.

After seeing the post, Daphney responded in the most touching way. “…it is all of you who make my day. I get to share such an important day with so many precious, wonderful families. That is a blessing I thank Jesus for all of the time! The delivery that prompted this post will stand out as one of the most precious and memorable of my career.”

Mom Proves How Bad Bottled Water Is With One Simple Test

We all think bottled water is cleaner and healthier than the water that comes out of the tap, which is why billions of bottled water drinks are sold around the world every year. However, this mom’s simple science project pokes a hole in that misconception.

With the help of her Son Carson, a Westville, Ohio, mother named Holly decided to buy seven popular brands of bottled water and figure out how good they really are for us by testing their pH levels with pH testing strips.

The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14 with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. Our bodies are naturally more alkaline with a pH level of 7.30-7.45. A study at the University of Bari in Italy has shown that cancer cells thrive in acidic environments and cannot survive in alkaline environments.

While researchers are split on how that effects cancer growth in our own bodies, it seems a high alkaline diet might still be vital since research has shown that eating too many acid-promoting foods can damage your kidney and liver, and might even raise your diabetes risk.

Holly and Carson tested Voss, Aquafina, Smart Water, Evian, Fiji, Sam’s, Dasani, Nestle Pure Life, and their regular tap water that had beenfiltered with a Brita filter to see what you are actually paying for. Shockingly only two of the brands had alkaline water.

“Our results prove that 2/3 of the bottled water tested, that people pay for and drink, thinking they are doing something good for themselves…..is truly the EXACT opposite. Hope this helps someone,” Holly wrote in a post to Facebook.
