Injured Soldiers Find New Purpose In Hunting Down Child Predators

For many injured soldiers returning home from serving in the armed forces, transitioning back into normal life can be difficult especially when it means saying goodbye to feeling like the competent hero in daring missions and instead feeling useless and weak.

To give these soldiers purpose again, the Human Exploitation Rescue Operative, or HERO, program is giving wounded, injured, and ill veterans the chance to chase down the bad guys again to take down predators who are sexually exploiting innocent children.

“In one second their entire life changed. When that happens, I know from personal experience, you start to wonder, what can I now do? And once you find this opportunity, you know it’s truly your opportunity to step back into that role, J. Christian, CEO of the National Association to Protect Children (Protect), said.

Ret. Sgt. Tom Block is one of the injured soldiers in training to become part of the HERO program. He struggled to find a purpose after his military career ended when he lost his eye, which has now been replaced with the Captain America shield, but has since fought his way back from his injury for his new mission. “It’s an opportunity for me to go after bad guys again.”

Soldiers like Block take part in an 11-week intensive course followed by a 1-year internship where they will be scanning computers and hard drives for child pornography, and working alongside law enforcement teams get the predators before they find another innocent child.

“You see groups of children being abused at levels the average American cannot fathom. If you imagine an infant getting gagged and bound tortured, it’s not a rare occurrence to come across,” Christian said.

“It’s horrible. But that’s my motivation, that’s my drive,” Block said. “To get after these guys. Get them off the internet and hopefully, I can get to them before they get to another child.”

She Was Blind For 5 Years But A Controversial Treatment Let Her See Again

It’s easy to judge a controversial treatment like stem cell therapy when it has zero bearing on your own life, but when this woman woke up one day and her entire world was gone, she was prepared to try anything to get her vision back.

In 2009, Vanna Belton was training to become a police officer when she started to notice her vision was blurry. Just a few weeks later, she was almost entirely blind, and doctors had no answer for her.

Belton has been determined to get her sight back ever since and has even tried Chinese herbs and acupuncture, but to regain her independence throughout those five years, she learned to use a cane, public transportation, and technological aids.

Eventually, Belton stumbled upon Dr. Jeffrey N. Weiss who was conducting a stem cell study for blind patients in Florida. Weiss’ study was completely unorthodox with no university or government affiliation, but Belton paid the $20,000 and signed up for the trial.

Her doctors tried to dissuade her from the highly controversial and misunderstood treatment, which involved injecting her own stem cells into her eyes around the retina, in the retina, and directly into the optic nerve.

Weiss made no promises on the treatment, as he didn’t fully understand how it would work, but when Belton was able to focus on a license plate on a car outside one day, she was stunned. “When I realized I could see the license plates, we started walking around the neighborhood reading them,” Belton said. “We drove around and read store signs. The Pennsylvania Dutch Market. The tanning salon.”

“We didn’t know how penicillin worked for many years, but it saved many lives in the meantime,” Weiss said. “It is hubris to think that something can’t work until you understand how it does. It is more important what the patient sees, not what I see.”

Watch the entire video below to see this woman describe the incredible moment she finally was able to see again.

Would you let a doctor try such a risky and controversial treatment? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and please SHARE this incredible story on Facebook.

Completing a triathlon is an incredible challenge for even an athlete to complete, but when this 9-year-old boy with cerebral palsy set his sights on finishing one alongside his dad, he did everything he possibly could to make it across the finish line.

At just 8-years-old, Bailey Matthews finished his first triathlon with dad Jono, and inspired everyone when he crossed the finish line unassisted. Now, a year later, Bailey wants to give every kid with a disability the chance to take part in a triathlon and feel that same exhilaration and pride that he got to experience when he crossed the finish line in his own race called the Be More Bailey Triathalon.

“The idea behind the triathlon is to give people a chance to be a part of it, even if they’re not confident they can do it,” Jono said.

Bailey still struggles with small daily tasks, but he refuses to let his condition stop him from doing what he loves. “He goes on with life as any other able-bodied person would,” Jono said. “He is very strong minded and doesn’t like to ask for help. He will find a way to do it himself.”

That mentality is what kept him training three times a week with dad, and what inspired him to create his own race for other children.

The Be More Bailey triathlon, which has no winner, is free for all the competitors and hopes to prove to any disabled child and parent that a disability doesn’t have to stand in your way of accomplishing your dreams.

While many people begrudgingly head into work come Monday morning and claim they wouldn’t have a job if they didn’t need one, they often forget how rewarding they are and how important it is to have a sense of purpose.

Yet for those who struggle to find jobs, like people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, finding a sense of purpose and independence can be practically impossible. “Employment is such a catalyst for a full life that allows people to be fully a part of the community,” said Nicole Jorwic, the Director of Rights Policy for The Arc, which is a national organization that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

To help put an end to this issue, Walter Gloshinski and his wife, Judy, took out a $300,000 loan to open Smiling With Hope Pizza this past January in Nevada and is making a point of hiring workers with disabilities. “We did it because it needed to be done,” Gloshinski told ABC News. “There are no jobs out there for these kids, so they are being prepared for nothing.”

Photo by Facebook/Smiling with Hope Pizza
Photo by Facebook/Smiling with Hope Pizza

Gloshinski has worked as a special education teacher for 25 years, and has created various programs in the past for kids with disabilities to gain working experience in bakeries and pizzerias. “We decided to open a pizzeria, and we are doing this all on our own dime. Everyone always thinks that other people will take care of people with disabilities,” Gloshinski said.

To ensure employees find the best position suitable for their needs, Gloshinski uses an individualized approach during training to highlight their strengths.

“We try to assess their skills, and place them in a situation where they can be successful and grow. Right now one of our trainees likes to be in the back. She does all the dishes, puts together pizza boxes, and she does the garlic knots,” Gloshinski said. “The other trainee is a people person, so he is up front seating people, busing tables and waiting tables.”

So far the community has been extremely supportive of pizzeria, and one day he hopes to set up pension plans for his employees as well as paid vacations.

Cats are typically very aloof and can even be unfriendly at times, but when this woman adopted a black and white cat named Panda, she knew she found a special companion.

When Panda came home to live with her new mom, Liel Ainmar Assayag, it was love at first sight. Panda bonded with Liel and loved cuddling with her and sleeping together. But when she got pregnant, Panda was always by Liel’s side wherever she went, and would cuddle up to her growing belly.

The 2-year-old cat was very protective from the beginning of Liel’s pregnancy, and would constantly sit guard near her growing belly, and would tuck her head against her skin as she purred.

At first, Panda was confused when baby Sean came home for the first time, but his scent let her know that he had been the one hiding in mom’s belly the whole time. “Now, 3 months later, she jumps on the bed near him, smells him, sits next to him. You can clearly see she loves him from the beginning!” Liel said.

Panda, as well as Liel’s other cats, have become Sean’s guardians, and are always keeping watch to make sure he’s safe.

“The cats are not allowed in the baby’s bed when the baby is in the crib, but every time I put the baby in the crib I can see lots of cat fur all over the bed. They were guarding the bed for him. They call me at night when the baby is crying, laying down beside him to keep him safe,” Liel said.

No parent should have to deal with their child’s death, but when one college student was killed in a tragic car accident, her family chose to make the best of a the devastating situation.

Brooke Dawkins was in her second year of college when she was killed, and despite doctors’ best efforts, they were unable to revive her after she became brain dead. When her mom and dad Laura and Chris heard their daughter was gone, they approached the hospital staff to see if their daughter’s organs could be donated to save someone’s life.

While Brooke could not be saved, her heart was still strong and healthy, and was surprisingly a perfect match for Carol Wright, whose heart was failing and was just weeks away from death.

Carol later reached out to the family and wanted to thank them in person. Two years later, they finally met in person and got to hear their daughters heart beat again. “To see her in person and being able to hug her and feel Brooke’s heart, it was indescribable,” Laura Dawkins said.

“I was a little apprehensive by how it would be received by Carol, but one shot of her face she was grinning from ear to ear,” Chris Dawkins said. “I think it’s a natural emotion to want to hear that heart beat again just like we want to see our child again.”

Anyone who’s ever gone grocery shopping has at one point or another felt the humiliation of misplacing your credit card or cash after the cashier finishes ringing up all of your items, and when this mom realized her wallet was missing, she was embarrassed and apologized to the cashier.

After realizing her wallet had been stolen while shopping in the Sydney Woolworths grocery store, she immediately went to go cancel her credit cards at a nearby bank before whoever stole her things could spend all of her money, but then got an even bigger surprise from one of the store’s employees.

“Within the same shopping Centre my mum found her bank branch and cancelled her credit cards. Whilst she was in the bank, a trolley pushed by a Woolworths staff member came in with all of her groceries bagged up and ready to take home. They were free of charge,” the woman’s daughter Melinda Deacon wrote in a post to thank the grocery chain.

Most dogs freak out at the mere sight of a vacuum cleaner, so this terrier’s hysterical reaction to a full-fledged robot really shouldn’t have be too surprising.

While out testing the movements and capabilities of Google’s new robotic dog named Spot, which was designed with a sensor head to navigate unlevel terrain, the team noticed an adorable terrier named Cosmo walking by in the parking lot and decided to introduce him to their ‘dog’ and see how the two got along.

Needless to say, Cosmo was thoroughly confused when meeting Spot for the first time, and didn’t know what to make of the robot as it uncannily mirrored his own movements.

Any parent knows that kids like to play with things they shouldn’t and will put just about anything in their mouth or nose when you’re not looking, and for one California mom, her little girl’s mischief sent them on a 6-month wild goose chase.

For over six months, 5-year-old Khloe and her mom Katelyn Powell visited doctor after doctor for a constant runny nose that was green and smelled horribly. Over the months, they visited three different kinds of doctors, including an ear/nose/throat specialist and even a dentist, to figure out what was wrong but none of the medicine they prescribed her for the sinus infection they believed she had made any difference.

They were all getting frustrated that nothing seemed to be helping, until one day Khloe’s uncle asked her to blow her nose hard and a 1.5-inch safety pin finally dislodged from her tiny nose. “I almost passed out,” Powell said. “I couldn’t believe it. It was huge. I was like, ‘Where did this come from!'”

Khloe tried to pretend she had no idea where the safety pin had come from, but after some questioning, she finally revealed she had found a bag of safety pins six months ago and wanted to see how far up she could get a pin up her nose.

“She’s amazing now and there hasn’t been any stinky discharge since, but we just want to be cautious,” Powell said. “We’ve also since had the talk and there will be nothing going up in her nose again. Never again.”

When given the chance to make a wish with the Make-A-Wish organization, most kids dream of meeting their favorite celebrity, going to Disney World, or even going on a trip around the world. Yet this young girl battling brain cancer only had one wish: help the planet.

Eight-year-old Amelia Meyer has been battling brain cancer, yet is determined to help make the parks in Kansas City safer, cleaner, and more beautiful. Yet in order to make a bigger impact on the environment, Amelia and her family contacted Make-A-Wish to organize a day where she and anyone who wanted to help could go out and clean up the trash in four of the city’s parks.

“She could’ve wished to go to Disney, she could’ve wished to go on a cruise or go to Europe, and her wish was to take care of the world for the day,” said Haw, a manager with the foundation. “I just can’t tell you how much I wish other children would be this much of an inspiration.”

When the day finally came, Amelia was stunned at how many people came out to support her and make her wish come true. Throughout the day, the mayor, the fire department, a soccer tea, and other volunteers came out to help. “I thought there was just going to be some people, not this much,” Amelia said.

“With all of the excitement that’s been around this wish and getting people involved and getting the word out there, it’s helped us forget for a little bit,” Amelia’s mother Jill said. “We didn’t think it would go like this. We were hoping for 30 people at Swope Park picking up trash. It’s a very, very hard time for us but to see this that this came out of that. My level of gratitude is unbelievable. My kid is so happy today and that’s what it’s about and that just thrills me beyond words.”

This Blind Goat Was Struggling To Get Around, So Her Best Friend Stepped Up To Be Her Guide Goat

Dogs are naturally the first thing most people turn to for guide animals, yet this farm animal named Maurice is proving that goats are the perfect guide animals.

In 2015, Farm Sanctuary, an animal sanctuary that has been rescuing abused or unwanted farm animals since 1986, rescued an eight-week-old goat who had been born blind. Despite her struggles with her disability, she constantly craved companionship and needed someone who could help her navigate new surroundings.

Goats are natural herd animals, which means they crave companionship, and panic when they’re separated from their herd. Marcia was rescued at such a young age, so never got the chance to bond with anyone. “She was constantly wanting somebody and crying a lot,” Susie Coston, national shelter director at Farm Sanctuary, said.

Then a few months later, a six-week-old goat named Maurice came to the sanctuary, and since he was still too young to be aggressive towards a goat he didn’t know, they bonded instantly.

“It was actually perfect,” Coston said. “They both wanted somebody and they were crying and crying to get to each other. Marcia will follow Maurice wherever he goes,” she added. “He just loves her.”

Soldiers and Marines go through intense training to help prepare them for what they see and experience while on the battlefield, yet no training can fully prepare someone for the hell that is war.

Captain Jason Haag served in two tours in Iraq and Afganistan, but he was never the same after returning home from his last tour of duty. During those tours, the Marine saw his friends die and almost died when he was shot. Those horrific memories followed him back to the United States, and despite being far from the battlefield, he developed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, which would make him feel as though he never left.

“I definitely didn’t do anything about it, I just went in on myself. I crumbled. Hit my breaking point. And I was just done,” Haag said.

After his wife gave him an ultimatum, Haag finally decided to get the help he desperately needed.

Haag turned to a stranger with four paws and a bushy tail for help, and hasn’t looked back since. Axel, a four-year-old German Shepherd was trained to help with PTSD, and senses when Haag is about to have a flashback as well as calms him down in social settings that can be overwhelming.

Little kids often dream of becoming firemen or policemen when they’re grown up because it’s usually one of the closest things to being an actual superhero, and getting to save the day.

Three-year-old Minh ‘Tatum’ Khang has been obsessed with the police for that very same reason, and to surprise him, his parents decided to call their local station, the Westminster Police Department, to see if an officer could come by and meet their little boy.

Officer Mike Gradilla volunteered to go and spend some time with the boy, and took some pictures together in their matching uniforms. Yet as exciting as the experience was for Minh, Gradilla was moved by the experience and hopes to possibly mentor the little boy as he gets older.

Whether you’ve been diagnosed yourself, or you’re supporting a friend or loved one through their fight, almost everyone at some point in their lives has been affected by cancer. When this little girl sat by and watched her aunt lose her fight to the disease, she knew she had to do something to help.

At just 10 years old, Madeline Domian already knows how brutal cancer can be for a person both physically and emotionally as she watched her late aunt Kathy, or ‘Katiedo’, fight. When she gets older, Madeline is determined to find a cure for cancer, but until then, she’s decided to honor her aunt by helping others during the tough treatments.

At first, Madeline tried selling cookies and donating the funds to the American Cancer Society, but she knew she could do more to honor her late aunt.

“When she died, I thought I should do something bigger,” Madeline said. “I thought, all kids want to do is be happy and I wanted to let them be happy when they go through their treatment.”

The fifth-grader came up with the idea to start ‘Katiedo Kare Kits 4 Kids’, which provides supplies and treats like stuffed animals, lotion, and coloring books to make treatment a little more pleasant for kids with cancer.

“All kids want to do is be happy, be with friends, play, so I wanted to make little kits to make them feel happy so that they feel better,” Madeline said.

Lions may be the king of the jungle, but one man, nicknamed ‘the lion whisperer’, is proving that these fearsome predators have a softer, loving side.

41-year-old Kevin Richardson is a South African conservationist and founder of a wildlife sanctuary, which is now home to over 30 lions. Over the years, Richardson has formed an incredible bond with these big cats by forming a trusting relationship through love and understanding, rather than breaking their spirit with abuse and chains.

Through these bonds, Richardson has been able to start a conversation about animal conservation, and raise awareness of the issues lions face both in captivity and in the wild.

Recently, Richardson was part of a photography project, which aimed to capture his unbelievable relationship with lions and prompts the question:’What legacy will we leave for our future generations?’

We often villainize homeless people and get paranoid that they might try to rob us, but in reality, many homeless people are some of the most generous people out there despite having almost nothing themselves.

After a night out in London, 21-year-old Nicole Sedgebeer realized she had missed the last train back to her home. At first, she figured she could wait out in the train station until train service resumed, but by the time she got there, the doors to the station had been locked.

Nicole began to panic, as she was completely alone with nowhere to stay in a bad neighborhood, yet just as she was about to start crying, an incredible homeless man named Mark became her guardian angel and made sure she found somewhere safe to stay.

“Just as I was about to burst into drunken tears I met my homeless friend Mark,” Nicole wrote in a Facebook post. “He said he would take me to a cafe that was open as it was too dangerous to walk by myself. He left me after a coffee and a chat and explained that he had to go get his sleeping bag but he would be back at 5 to walk me back to the station.”

When it got a little past 5, Nicole figured Mark wouldn’t return, so she began walking by herself back to the station. But as she turned a corner, she saw Mark running down the street toward her.

“Not only did he turn up but he had to get a bus to come get me. This man who I probably would of avoided eye contact with if he asked for spare change, completely changed such a negative event into the most eye opening event in my life. Mark you are one special man, I will never look down on a homeless person again. This was also his first ever selfie!”

Anyone who lives in a city knows how common it is to see a homless person on the sidewalk begging for change or sleeping, and for the most part, people try to avoid eye contact and ignore them as much as possible.

So when one Baltimore man named Jonathan Stormz saw a homless man laying on the ground, he thought nothing of it until a teenager walked by. Stormz had been waiting for his bus inside of a bus booth, and was curious to see what the teenager was doing when he stopped and stood over the man.

Stormz had been waiting for his bus when witnessed the moment a young man was about to walk by, but then stopped and nelt near a homeless man’s feet. According to Stormz, the unknown teen touched his shoe, and started praying over him, and he knew immediately he had to share this incredible gesture with his friends and family.

Stormz was stunned by his compassion, and quickly snapped a picture of the moment. “This was an amazing sight!” Stormz wrote in a post to Facebook. “I pray this kid becomes a leader amongst his peers, and continues on this path!! Not all Baltimore youth are lost!!”

At just three weeks old, a puppy should be exploring their new surroundings, and being showered with love. But instead, this 3-week-old Pit Bull named Jake was trapped in his new owner’s backyard shed after it caught on fire.

Luckily for the scared and helpless pup, neighbor and firefighter Bill Lindler spotted the smoke, and immediately ran to put the fire out and save Jake. While Jake was safe, 75 percent of his body had been covered in bad burns.

Jake was brought straight to the vet to treat his burns, but days later when Lindler called to check in on him, he found out that Jake’s owners abandoned him at the vet when they found out how much his care would cost.

Lindler had become attatched to the puppy he rescued, and he and his family knew instantly that they would take him home and give him a family that would never abandon him.

After Jake was able to heal and grow, he was sworn in on December 8th, 2015 by the city of Hanahan to become the mascot for Lindler’s fire department.

While being sworn in, Jake took the K-9 Oath of Office: “I, Jake the Fire Dog, as the Mascot for the City of Hanahan Fire Department, do hereby promise to help make kids smile with my charming personality and help them to learn about fire safety and what to do in an emergency situation. […] No job is too big or too small where kids are concerned.”

Originally Lindler had hoped Jake could become a therapy dog for burned children after he survived such a traumatic burn, but instead, he decided that Jake would be perfect for teaching kids about fire safety and one day work as an arson detection dog.

We’ve all been warned to look out for the obvious signs of cancer, so when this mom and dad noticed a bump in their daughter’s mouth, a scary diagnosis like cancer was the furthest thing from their mind.

After visiting a handful of dentists and other doctors, Paul and Keri Mosier found out that instead of a new tooth, their 7-year-old daughter Harmony had a rare form of cancer that had formed a tumor in her mouth. “We went to a dentist, orthodontist, to oral surgeons and finding out it was cancer didn’t even cross my mind,” said mom, Keri.

Harmony decided to cut her hair short so that it wouldn’t look as bad when the chemotherapy started to make her hair fall out, but despite the treatment, she’s looking on the bright side. With all the attention, “It’s like my birthday every day,” she said.

Harmony needs to undergo 12 weeks of chemo treatment and surgery, which are both extremely costly. To help the family, their friends, family, and the rest of the community has come together to raise over $27,000.

“It’s humbling to see how many people have reached out in a number of ways including that,” said dad, Paul. “Allowing people that love us to express it in all the ways that they have.”

While most fourth graders are practicing their swing for little league, this Indiana 10-year-old just signed a major league contract with the Yankees this past Monday.

Landis Sims was born without hands or half his legs, but despite all the challenges he and his family has had to overcome because of his disability, his positive attitude has allowed him to do more than anyone could have ever imagined. “The first day was pretty devastating,” Amanda, said about the day they first learned of Landis’ disabilities. “Then God started working and it has just been an amazing ride since then.”

When Landis was just 2 years old, he was given a ball and a bat, and has been a baseball fanatic ever since. Today, the Elizabeth, Indiana fourth grader is able to play through the help of prosthetics and a soccer shin guard to keep his glove in place.

Landis was originally supposed to watch a batting practice with the Yankees, but after manager Joe Girardi met the boy, he was so moved by his positivity that they offered him a one-day official contract with the team. “People can overcome extraordinary circumstances,” Girardi said. “It’s amazing what the mind can do.”
