Most kids dream of becoming a hero when they grow up, and for 6-year-old Mason Rudder, that dream was no different.

Mason has always dreamt of becoming a Navy SEAL and saving the country, yet in his short years, he’s already had to undergo 10 surgeries for a rare genetic neuromuscular condition that affects his bones and joints, and will make becoming a Navy SEAL a little more difficult.

To celebrate his sixth birthday and make his biggest dream come true, mom Suzanne Rudder reached out to Asymmetric Solutions, which provides combat training from skilled veterans who served with Army Special Forces, NavySEALs, Army Delta, SEAL 6, and Agency SOF.

With the help of retired Navy SEAL Jared Ogden, Mason spent the day practicing demolition and sniper training.

Incredible Man Adopts Elderly And Sick Animals That Nobody Wanted

Each year, approximately 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters across the country, and of those animals, only 2.7 million are actually adopted. To help save some of these ‘unadoptable’ animals, one Colorado man has taken it upon himself to save as many of these animals as possible and give them a happy and loving family.

Steve Greig, a Colorado-based accountant, grew up in an animal loving family, and that passion has persisted. When he was old enough to have his own place, Greig always had three or four dogs, yet when one died, he came up with a brilliant way to make the best of his loss.

“I was just so distraught about [that death]. A month or two went by and I still felt so horrible about it,” Greig said. “I decided that the only way I would feel better was if something good happened that probably wouldn’t have happened if he had not died.”

After that one pet’s death, Greig went to his local animal shelter to find the least adoptable dog they had, and give him an amazing life.”So [I adopted] a 12-year-old Chihuahua named Eeyore with a heart murmur and four bad knees and I brought him home and that was just the beginning of all the animals,” Greig said.

Since that first visit to the shelter, Greig has opened his heart and his home to 10 dogs, a pig named Bikini, a few cats, two pigeons, two ducks, two chickens, a rabbit, and a pond of koi fish.

Aside from his job, Greig’s life revolves around caring and loving for these mostly senior animals who wouldn’t have gotten another chance at finding a forever home because of their old age. “A normal day for me is getting up at 5 a.m,” he explained. “In the morning and making breakfast for all of them, which, you know, there’s 10 [dogs] and most of them have different diets.”

“Bikini’s laying in the yard and the dogs are all laying around the yard. They just make it feel like home,” Greig said as he spent the afternoon outside with his animals. “It’s just fulfilling knowing that these guys are happy and loved and well-taken care of. It makes my days worthwhile.”

Watch the video below to see Greig round up just a few of his adopted animals for a road trip.

An Accident Left This Boy Without A Finger, But These Hero Cops Show Him He’s Not Alone

As adults, we learn to love and appreciate the things that make us unique, but as children, those very differences are the things that other kids tease and make fun of. When an accident last August caused Zalend to have an amputation, he was understandably self-conscious, and tried as hard as possible to hide his injury from his peers.

After the accident, which injured his index finger as well as his thumb, doctors worked for hours to try and save them. Ultimately, they were only able to save most of his thumb, but Zalend lost his index finger. At the time, his parents had no health insurance, which has left them with $150,000 in medical bills, but what was worse for them was seeing how self-conscious the injury made their 9-year-old.

To remind Zalend that he’s not the only one with an amputation, Lt. Rackow and Officer Edwards from the Midland Police Department met with Zalend to let him know that he’s not alone and “despite any obstacle, you can achieve anything you put your mind to.”

The Midland Police Department posted a picture of their meeting to Facebook, and wrote these encouraging words for Zalend: “Hey Midland, meet 9-year-old Zalend! It took a lot of courage for him to take this picture. Zalend recently lost part of his index finger in an accident and has been afraid to show others his injury. Lt. Rackow and Officer Edwards met with Zalend to show him that he’s not alone, and to let him know despite any obstacle, you can achieve anything you put your mind to. We are proud to call you our friend, Z. Let’s hear it for Zalend! #CourageousZalend

After the meeting, Zalend found courage in other people’s stories of living with an amputation. “He has a lot of support and I’m glad that there is support out there for everyone else, it’s encouraging, it’s real encouraging.” mom Nichole said.

While visiting her local Starbucks in Greenfield, Indiana, Janet Feeney was pulling through the drive thru when she was stopped in her tracks as she watched an employee carry out some food and a drink to a homeless man who had been sitting outside of the shop for two days.

According to Feeney, the homeless man had shown up outside the Starbucks on March 5, and ever since, employee Alissa Dexter had been going out of her way to make sure he had something to eat and drink.

Dog Saves His 7-Year-old Best Friend’s Life When His Blood Sugar Drops Dangerously Low

For most dog owners, their dog is a fluffy companion who relies on you to stay healthy and happy, but for one 7-year-old, his dog is actually the one keeping him alive.

When Luke Nuttall was just two years old, he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, which blindsided his parents as they had no idea how to keep their son’s blood sugar levels steady. “We don’t have a single member of our family [with diabetes]. I knew nothing about it. Nothing,” Nuttall told CBS News. “A lot of kids die almost at diagnosis. People don’t know the warning signs.”

To make sure Luke’s blood sugar levels were properly monitored, the family got countless meters, monitors, and a continuous blood sugar monitor that is inserted underneath his skin. Despite all these tools, Luke’s best and most accurate alarm system is hid dog Jedi.

After Luke’s diagnosis, the family decided to get an 11-week-old dog, and train him to become his diabetic alert dog (DAD) who can smell Luke’s blood sugar and alert them when his levels get too high, or too low.

One night, Jedi’s training was put to the test when everyone was fast asleep, but Luke’s blood sugar was quickly plummeting. “5 minutes before I took this picture we were all asleep,” mom Dorrie wrote in a post to Facebook. “No alarms were going off, no one was checking blood, no one was thinking about diabetes, and it’s in those moments when our guards are down, when we are just living life, when we let our minds drift from diabetes, that it has the upper hand – and things can get scary very fast…but thankfully we have a Jedi.”

Jedi jumped up on Dorrie’s bed, and actually laid on top of her to wake her up and wouldn’t budge until she got up and tested his blood with a meter. As expected, Jedi was right. Luke’s blood sugar was a staggering 57 mg/dl and dropping fast. “Luke was laying right next to me, just inches from me, and without Jedi I would have had no idea that he was dropping out of a safe range, she said.

“Jedi’s job goes beyond alerting, he also saves Luke from being alone, from being scared; he is his constant companion.”

Most people don’t think twice about what they are doing when they get dressed in the morning, but for anyone with a disability, dressing yourself can be an almost impossible task with all of the tiny buttons, zippers, and ties.

When Mindy Scheier gave birth to her son Oliver, they found out he had a rare form of Muscular Dystrophy and as he got older, it quickly became clear that normal clothes were too difficult for him to put on without help.

When Oliver came home one day asking Scheier if he could wear jeans to school like the other kids, she knew there wouldn’t be enough room for his leg braces, but never wanted her son to feel different.

“I was faced with a difficult decision, do I let my son walk safely into school in sweatpants and his braces on — no jeans,” Scheier said. “Or do I let him walk into school in jeans but without braces, which is unsafe but would allow him to hold his head up high because he looks like the other kids do? It was at that moment that I decided that no mother should have to make that difficult decision for their child.”

Scheier, who had a background in fashion, got to work in starting Runway of Dreams where she could make stylish, normal clothing with undetectable modifications so that anyone with a disability could easily dress themselves, or a caretaker could dress them faster.

Scheier’s clothes give kids and adults independence in being able to choose the kinds of clothes they want to wear, and allow many to dress themselves for the first time in their lives.

No matter what your opinion is on gun control, it’s pretty clear that firearms and children do not mix. In 2015 alone, on average, toddlers shot someone accidentally once per week.

Despite the numerous statistics that prove how dangerous it is to have young children around guns, Jamie Gilt, a pro-gun activist from Florida and mom, was set on raising her son around these deadly guns and explained in a post to Facebook:  “my right to protect my child with my gun trumps your fear of my gun.”

In fact, Gilt was so passionate about guns that she was already teaching her 4-year-old son how to use guns, and how to shoot.

However, when driving together one day, her son picked up her .45 caliber handgun, and accidentally shot Gilt in the back as she was driving.

Gilt managed to flag down a police officer to get help, and while waiting for the ambulance, she had to explain that her son had been the one to pull the trigger.

Detectives have yet to figure out how the 4-year-old got the gun in the first place, and may charge her if she failed to keep her son away from the firearm.

Teachers spend so much time encouraging their students to grow and helping them with any problems that eventually, the students become like their own, which is why the often go above and beyond their job description to make sure their students are safe and happy.

When this Wisconsin first-grade teacher Jodi Schmidt found out one of her first graders was sick, and desperately needed a new kidney, she knew she had to step up and help if she was a match.

To let Natasha and her family know the good news, Schmidt called grandma Chris Burelton down to the school for a surprise. After opening the pretty pink box, Burelton found a paper inside that revealed Schmidt was a match in two places. “You? Oh my gosh!” Burelton cries. “Here I thought she was coming to school because she was naughty!”

Bear Kept In A Cage For 30 Years Transforms After Hibernating For The First Time

Despite being so adorable, wild animals deserve to live out their lives in their natural habitat, not be forced into being domesticated and living life inside cramped cages.

When rescuers found Fifi and three other bears they had been abandoned in tiny metal and concrete cages, and had wasted away to skin and bones. For over 30 years, these bears were part of a small roadside zoo in Pensylvania, and had been forced to perform tricks until the zoo was shut down in the ’90s for multiple Animal Welfare Act violations.

It was only until 2015 that rescuers intervened and finally found Fifi and her brothers. “They were so well-hidden in the country that no knew even knew they were there,” said Pat Craig, Executive Director of the Wild Animal Sanctuary.

When Fifi was rescued, her coat was thin and dull, she was incredibly thin, and she was suffering from painful, untreated arthritis.

Finally, she was transported to The Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado where she had space to explore and run free. “[We knew] her spirit was going to soar really quickly, [even though] her body was going to take a while to catch up,” Craig said.

Now, Fifi has finally been given the chance to hibernate for the first time in her entire life, and at 30-years-old, she is healthy and getting stronger each day.

93-Year-Old Dance Teacher Celebrates Her Birthday By Teaching 5-Year-Old’s To Dance

They say that if you find the thing that you love to do the most, then you’ll never work a day in your life, and it seems that sentiment is true for a dance teacher who has spent the last 40 years teaching dance.

When Gert Hendry was just 5-years-old, she learned to dance from a Rockette, and she’s been a dancer ever since. To celebrate her 93 birthday, Hendry decided that the only thing she wanted to do was teach her dance class to a bunch of 4- and 5-year-olds wearing birthday crowns, and not even her age could stop her.

While working on your birthday seems cruel to most, Hendry explains there’s nothing she’d rather do, and her students know it. Her passion is what keeps parents sending their kids to her. “The crazy thing about this class is that the moms of this class were in this class,” said assistant Amanda Stiles.

However, Hendry’s dance classes are about more than just teaching her students how to use their body. Her classes teach them to use their brain, too. “I teach them to respect and love each other,” Hendry said.

Most kids wouldn’t be caught dead hugging their mom or dad in front of their entire sixth-grade class, but then again, most kids don’t know what it’s like to not see their parent for over a year, and question whether or not they’ll ever even see their parent again.

When twin brother and sister Logan and Kaylee got a surprise visit from their dad Sergeant Louis Grady who had been deployed in Bahrain for over a year, they didn’t hesitate to give their dad a huge hug despite having their entire class watching. At first, Logan and Kaylee were more concerned about getting their work done when the entire sixth grade class at the Mint Hill Middle School was called down to the gymnasium for a special guest, but as soon as they saw who the special guest was, they were both overwhelmed and overjoyed.

“When they said that we were going to an assembly, I was like I have so much work to do, but I had no idea this was going to happen. I missed him,” Logan said.

Mom Thought Her Son Would Never Go To A Birthday Party Until An Understanding Mom Offers To ‘Make It Work’

For a parent of a child with special needs, an invitation to something as innocent as a birthday party can be a stark reminder of all the things that may be too difficult for their child to experience.

Over the years, mom Tricia Klein of Brantford, Ontario has had to decline every single invitation for organized sports, birthday parties, sleepovers, and play dates for her son Timothy, who has non-verbal autism.

“I can say whole-heartedly that my son has not attended a single one,” Klein wrote on her blog. “We have received countless invitations in the few years Timothy has attended school; of kids who mercilessly invite the entire class – and for that I’m grateful (don’t get me wrong). Really cool sounding parties too. I wonder if the parents know what would happen if I brought Timothy? The interruptions…the meltdowns…how I would hate to take the spotlight from the birthday child. So we politely decline. Every. Single. One…Until this one arrived.”

Despite craving social interactions and wanting to make friends, certain situations make him anxious and can overstimulate him. “It’s tough because he really does crave social interaction and being included,” Klein explained. “He also has many food aversions and difficulty with sensory input. I would hate for Timothy to have these difficulties and take the spotlight from the birthday child.”

Yet, when one birthday invitation came in the mail from a classmate and mother who wanted to make it work, she finally saw hope in letting him attend a party.

“Carter sat beside Timothy at school and he always talks about him,” the note read that came attached with Timothy’s invitation. “I really hope he can come. We are renting a bounce castle that we can attach a small bounce slide at the bottom. We will also have water balloons and water guns. Maybe Timothy can come earlier in the day if it would too much with the whole class. Let me know so we can make it work.”

U.S. Navy Miraculously Finds Puppy After Being Lost At Sea For Over A Month

It takes a lot to shock Navy sailors and officials since they’ve seen just about everything during training and rescue missions, yet to say these rescuers were stunned to find the dog who had fallen into the ocean over a month ago would be an understatement.

On the morning of February 10th, fisherman Nick Hayworth had taken Luna, his 1-year-old German Shepherd puppy, out on the boat with him about 2 miles off the coast of San Clemente Island. Hayworth and his crew had been busy bringing in traps, and when he finally looked around for Luna, she had completely vanished.

It was presumed that she had fallen overboard, and Hayworth immediately reported her missing to the nearby naval base.

“He told us Luna was a very powerful swimmer and that he was 90 percent sure she’d head for shore,” said Sandy DeMunnik, public affairs officer for the US Navy’s Naval Base Coronado. “So our staff searched the island, but with no luck. He stayed in the area for two more days to look for her, and after a week, we considered her lost at sea and presumed dead.”

Yet just this week, the Navy staff spotted Luna sitting on the side of the road as they started arriving to work on an island nearly 80 miles away from the San Diego coast.

“They saw Luna just sitting on the side of the road wagging her tail,” she said. “Keep in mind, there are no domesticated animals on the island, so it was a stunning sight.”

Amazingly, Luna was completely unharmed and only slightly underweight when she was found by the Navy officers, who contacted Hayworth to let him know the good news. Hayworth had been out in the middle of a lake when he got the call, but was overwhelmed when he heard Luna was alive. “He had to do all sorts of acrobatics to get signal, but he was ecstatic — jumping up and down,” DeMunnik said.

Can you believe Luna managed to survive swimming nearly 80 miles to an island off the coast, and surviving on her own for over a month? Let us know what you think in the comments below, and please SHARE this with friends on Facebook.

For a group of fourth graders, $600 can buy them just about anything they can dream up.Yet rather than use the money for a fun adventure or a pricey toy, these fourth graders decided to help out an animal in need.

When fourth-grade students Bilal, Krish, and Leo from the Tibbals Elementary School found out that a beagle mix who was covered in cuts, bruises, and was suffering from a broken leg had been rescued by a local animal shelter, they came together to figure out some way they could help the hurt pup before it was too late.

When Zoe was found, she was suffering from numerous injuries, but the worst was a broken leg which needed to be operated on immediately, or else the leg would have to be amputated. Despite her pain, Zoe constantly kissed and nuzzled her caregivers.

In the United States, dogs are usually considered lovable pets or loyal service animals, however, many other places around the world don’t hold our four-legged companions with such high regard, and unfortunately, consider them a source of food.

Instead of being showered with love and affection, this 2-year-old Golden Retriever mix found herself trapped in a dog meat farm in South Korea where she was hung upside down by her paws in a dark room, forced to overeat to gain weight, and repeatedly beaten to make her meat more tender.

However, her legs were tied so tightly that soon her skin became infected, which quickly spread to her entire body. Since her meat was no longer edible, she was thrown away in a garbage bag and left to die from the infection and starvation.

Luckily, the sick dog named Chi Chi, which is Korean for ‘loving’, was found just in time, and was taken immediately to a veterinarian who had to amputate all four of her legs to keep her alive.

“She survived and the day after surgery she was trying to walk. She was smiling and wagging her tail,” said Shannon Keith, president of Animal Rescue, Media & Education. “Then, a couple days later, she even started walking on her little stumps.”

After 2 months in recovery, Chi Chi came a long way and has now even found a forever home in Arizona with the Howell family, who hopes to fit her with her own prosthetics and hopefully one day train her as a therapy dog for kids and veterans who had lost limbs.

“She can walk. She can run,” Megan Howell said. Chi Chi can do just about everything that a dog with all of their paws can do except go up the stairs.

After Seeing What PTSD Can Do To Soldiers, This Teen Is Keeping Them Alive One Coin At A Time

Soldiers risk everything for their country, yet they often struggle to transition back to normal civilian life after returning home from war, and each day, 22 veterans end up committing suicide in the United States due to that lack of support.

Unfortunately, this is a reality that one Wisconsin teen, Haley Orlowski, is all too familiar with. Upon returning home from duty, two of her cousins struggled to cope with their Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and ultimately died after never getting the help they both desperately needed.

Haley always remembered her Marine cousin Stephen Keyes as funny and upbeat, but after a few rounds of deployment in Afghanistan, he developed PTSD and shot himself at just 26-years-old. “He wasn’t very open, which is a problem that many soldiers with PTSD suffer from. They think people might see them as being weak. So they suffer by themselves,” Haley said.

To put an end to the needless suffering and deaths, Haley has placed a jar or bag in the 48 homerooms at her Wauwatosa West High School with a goal of raising $22 in each.

Once she raises enough money, Haley will donate everything to the Project Welcome Home Troops, which uses alternative methods like meditation and controlled breathing workshops to help returning veterans cope with their transition.

While foxes are known for being cunning and sly, this 4-year-old Artic fox named Archer is proving that even these small creatures have a sense of humor, and enjoy having a laugh when they’re not up to no good.

Most people have never had the chance to hear a fox laugh, nevermind pet one, yet it’s a daily reality for 25-year-old Kristina Shafer, who adopted Archer when he was a cub from a breeder in Indiana. “Arctic foxes are definitely not for everyone since they’re not the easiest pet to have, but I did a lot of research and decided they were for me,” Kristina said. “They take a lot of dedication in terms of training.”

Archer requires constant supervision and is full of energy, but will crack up whenever he hears laughter, especially at the end of a long day when he’s sleepy, which is when Kristina and her boyfriend managed to get Archer to hysterical laugh and captured it on video.

“He’s a very vocal, very loving, very happy fox,” Kristina said. “He also does some happy ‘screams’ and he honestly sounds like a monkey sometimes. He also does a howl whenever he’s out in the yard and wants attention or wants to come inside.”

When most people think of superheroes, they think of fictional characters that use their superhuman abilities to save the day. However, one Australian 5-year-old boy is proving that all you need to be a superhero and save the day is a costume to hide your identity and a bouquet of flowers.

This mystery little boy, known publicly as the ‘Flower Ninja’ wanted to start a kindness project, and with mom’s help, they decided he would pass out flowers to strangers that seemed like they could use a smile. “I was in my bedroom talking about this with my mumma and then she ordered the outfit to be made and then it all started up,” the Flower Ninja told 7 News.

At first, mom Rebecca Jones turned to her Facebook friends to decide who would first receive flowers. ‘We would like you guys to nominate someone and my son will choose the recipient. Maybe someone needs a bit of cheering up, is having a rough time or maybe you want to nominate a business or someone for something positive,’ Jones wrote.

After her initial post, they were flooded with nominations, so a local flower shop decided to volunteer to supply the flowers.

“I was scared the first time and then I got better and better and better,” the 5-year-old said. “One time, one person cried and the next time they said thank you and gave me a hug.”

Hero Veteran Walks 5000 Miles Across The Country To Raise Awareness For PTSD

Soldiers are trained to be able to handle almost any situation while on duty, yet receive little to no training or help on life after their service.

Without any guidance or support, nearly every soldier struggles with the effects of war and has seen the effects of PTSD in either their own life or the lives of friends and family. For some, the pain becomes so unbearable and so crippling that they see no other way to stop the pain than to kill themselves.

“Veteran Suicide has reached an all-time high and this just isn’t acceptable. These men and women fought for us, bled for us, and some died for us. All so that we may live,” Marine Corps Veteran Ryan Weldon wrote in a post to his GoFundMe page, which has raised over $9,000 for the PTSD Survivors of America organization.

Weldon knew firsthand how PTSD affects daily life and decided he needed to do something to help put an end to the needless veteran suicides each day. “Twenty-two veterans a day take their own life due to post-traumatic stress,” he said. “As a Marine, I refuse to sit by and do nothing.”

To raise awareness, Weldon decided he would walk 5,000 miles from Delaware to San Francisco, CA. Along the way Weldon interviewed other veterans and their families to spread stories of strength and hope in regards to dealing with PTSD. “When I said I was gonna do this trek, my family…thought I was crazy,” Weldon said. “Everyone called me crazy, and I stood up for what I believed in. I knew it was a serious cause. I knew it was a series issue. I knew I needed to do something.”

“Now that our Military veterans are home they need us to fight for them, they deserve our help, because it’s the least we can do, for everything they’ve done for us,” Weldon, who just completed his cross-country trek, explained.

Each year, 7.6 million animals enter animal shelters throughout the United States each year, and about 2.7 million of those animals end up being euthanized if they aren’t lucky enough to find a loving family to adopt them and give them a forever home.

When the sweet pit bull mix named March was picked up as a stray and brought to the ACCT Philly dog shelter in Philadelphia, everyone was sure he’d find a perfect family to shower him in love. Soon enough, a family showed interest, and March was about to be free from the cold, lonely kennel.

But just as March was set to be released to his new home, the adoption fell through and he had to be returned to the scary city shelter. March was crushed by the news and became so depressed that he would stare at the wall all day, which only hurt his chance of finding another family.

Luckily, after March’s heartbreaking photo went viral, a rescue organization stepped up to get him out of the shelter, keep him from being euthanized, and to finally help give him the life he deserves with a family who can love him.
