While 50 pence (about $.72) might not be much money for some people, it was everything one homeless man from Bristol, England had to his name before giving it all away to a complete stranger.

Jack Richardson had been begging in the streets in 2013 when Toni Osbourne first walked by him. “I asked her for money, it was just before Christmas and she burst into tears,” Richardson said. “She didn’t have quite enough to put the lights on over Christmas, so I gave her enough to put the lights on.”

After his original act of kindness, the two kept in touch and quickly became friends. Eventually, Osbourne offered him the spare bedroom in her home. “When I went to stay with her we fell for each other,” Richardson said.

Richardson proposed to Osbourne at the exact spot he gave her everything he had, and nearly two years later, the couple married with the help of friends and local businesses.

“An amazing person has even donated money for Toni to get a wedding dress. Then there’s a guy I know, from the pub down the road, who is my size and has a box of Armani suits. He’s very kindly offered to bring a few in for me to try and let me borrow one,” Richardson said.

Dog owners will do just about anything to make sure their four-legged babies are loved, happy, and comfortable. So when this couple and their seven dogs started to feel too cramped as they slept together in their king size bed, they decided to change their bed instead of their sleeping situation.

Chris and Mariesa Hughes, who started the Mr. Mo Project together, which is a nonprofit that gets old or sick dogs out of shelters where they will be euthanized, have dedicated their entire life to dogs- both those that are their own and those that are not.

Over the years, the couple has adopted 7 dogs who were all rescued from various forms of abuse, and they are so devoted to their pets that they all sleep in bed together.

“They all love to sleep on the bed with us but our sleep has really suffered lately,” Chris said. “Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to try to steal a corner of my pillow back from Gremlin,” Mariesa added. “I need my beauty rest!”

Kicking the dogs out was simply not an option, so Mariesa and Chris decided to push a full-size bed next to their own to give everyone more space as they wait for a local furniture builder to make a custom super bed with steps and a ramp so that their older dogs could always make it into bed.

Getting braces is a fairly normal part of growing up for human kids and teens, but it turns out we’re not the only members of the animal kingdom who have to get a mouth full of metal.

Mr. Hot Wing, a regular goldfish from Allentown, Pennsylvania, was born without a lower jaw bone, which meant breathing and eating was incredibly difficult since his mouth could not stay open. Instead of let him die, his owner brought him in to see Dr. Brian Palmeiro from the Lehigh Valley Veterinary Dermatology to see if there was anything they could do to save him.

Dr. Palmiero did a lot of research to try and create a solution for Mr. Hot Wing’s very unique problem, and decided to make custom braces made out of a plastic credit card.

The entire surgery only cost about $150, which is substantially less than human braces, and finally let Mr. Hot Wing breath and eat normally.

Superglue Helps A Little Girl Walk After Years Of Pain

While most 7-year-olds spend their time running around playing games with friends, this little girl could barely walk because of a mysterious ‘bruise’ that started bothering her when she was just 3 years old.

When Madison Fairchild would complain to mom Kristen about the invisible bruise, they assumed that they just couldn’t see it and that it would get better over time. “Every time we bumped it she would scream or start crying,” Kristen said. “After a month of constantly complaining about why her leg hurt, we got her leg checked.”

Finally, after doctors gave Madison an X-ray, they were finally able to see that the mysterious ‘bruise’ was actually an unusual clump of veins in her leg, which weren’t dangerous but could cause incredible pain that could prevent someone from doing simple activities like walking or standing.

Photo by Seattle Children's HospitalPhoto by Seattle Children's Hospital
Photo by Seattle Children’s HospitalPhoto by Seattle Children’s Hospital

“For the first few years, she was able to move around, [but] she constantly skipped because she couldn’t bear a lot of weight on that front leg,” Fairchild said. “She would always walk on her right toe because anytime she extended her leg it would cause those muscle to contact around the malformation and would cause pain.”

When Madison could no longer straighten her leg, her doctor suggested an experimental treatment in which medical-grade superglue is injected into the veins so they can be removed surgically.

Dr. Jonathan Perkins, a pediatric otolaryngology physician at Seattle Children’s Hospital, discussed a new experimental treatment in which medical-grade superglue could be injected into the veins so that they can be removed surgically without damaging normal tissue around it.

Kirsten was hesitant of the experimental procedure at first, but decided to try it. “Four days later, she’s walking,” Kristen said. “It’s a totally different child. Her outlook is more positive.”

Without the help of animal rescue leagues, like the Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, many stray and abandoned animals end up eating things they shouldn’t or don’t eat at all. Yet, after a burglar stole about 65 bags of pet food from their food pantry, they had no way of feeding their animals.

When staff from the animal rescue league, which helps over 2,000 dogs and cats each year, went to feed their animals on Sunday morning, they were shocked to see the entire pantry was bare. “I don’t know what your thought process is when you decide to steal donated pet food from a food pantry,” said Monica Zulauf, president and CEO of the rescue. “I never really want to understand that thought process.”

“A staff person came in the morning and noticed that someone had pushed through the chicken wire on our community food pantry and they had taken everything,” Zulauf said. “They left one small bag of kitten food.”

But before they knew it, people began lining up in the parking lot to donate and replace the stolen food, and ended up with at least four times more food than they originally had.

“The community response was amazing,” Zulauf said. “It was a steady stream of everything — from toddlers carrying little bags of cat treats to families who had picked up full bags of pet food.”

“A day that began with sadness and shock, ended up filling our hearts over-the-top! We were confident we would replace the stolen food, but your support – the support from our community – far exceeded our wildest expectations! We are overwhelmed by the generosity of hundreds of people,” the Animal League of New Hampshire wrote in a post to Facebook after the community rallied behind them to replace the stolen food.

Heroes Find A New Mom For These Orphaned Baby Bear Cubs

Finding a human orphaned baby and adoptive parent is relatively straightforward thanks to adoption agencies, but finding a mom to adopt an orphaned bear cub is a bit trickier, and involves a little more manual labor.

Wild animals like bear cubs deserve to grow up in the wild rather than spend the rest of their lives in captivity, which is why these biologists from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were determined to find orphaned bear cubs a mother who could raise them as her own in the wild the past winter.

In order to find a new mom, the biologists find female bears who already have young cubs, and lay the orphaned cub beside her own cubs inside their den while they are hibernating.

Once the biologists are able to track down the den of a mother bear, the team digs their way in where she will be sedated, collared, and finally given a health exam. Finally, the orphaned cub is placed with the other babies to hibernate until spring.

“You can trick females into taking additional cubs if it’s done right,” Boersen said. “It at least gives them a chance they wouldn’t have and it works nearly 100 percent of the time if you can place the cub with a denned [female bear].”

Genius Animal Shelter Is Finding Jobs For ‘Unadoptable’ Cats

Anyone who has ever had a pet cat, or even just played with one, will know that cats are natural hunters, so one rescue organization decided to use their natural instincts to help them find a home.

Each year, nearly 1.5 million cats are euthanized in the United States because they run out of time in a shelter, or because they are considered ‘unadoptable’. To help give these innocent animals a second chance, and give them another opportunity to find a home, SpokAnimal, a Washington state rescue organization, set up a program to find ‘unadoptable’ cats jobs.

Since cats are natural hunters, and are experts at killing mice, SpokAnimal pairs cats with farms and warehouse owners who have a mouse problem where they fill the position of ‘mouse manager’.

It might not be great news for mice, but since the program began in 2009, 1,700 cats have been saved from being killed, and have not only found jobs, but families as well.

Being a full-time college student is hard enough, but one Baylor University student has the incredible challenge of being a full-time student AND a mother to a 4 1/2-month-old baby girl.

When 33-year-old Katy Humphrey’s babysitter canceled at the last minute, she had no choice but to bring her daughter Millie to class with her. “Dr. Willoughby said if I ever needed to bring her to class, he was OK with it, so it made me feel relieved to know I would be able to learn and take care of my daughter,” Humphrey said.

Humphrey was determined to make it to her exercise bio chemistry class, which she was taking for her degree in exercise physiology.”I was in the Marines for 14 years as a Pashto linguist and signals analyst, and after a few friends were injured in Afghanistan, I felt called to work with wounded warriors,” she said.

Yet when the two got to class, Millie was getting fussy, and Dr. Darryn Willoughby could tell Humphrey was getting distracted as she tried to pacify the baby. To help her focus, Willoughby took Millie, and held her during the entire 55-minute class.

“I didn’t do it for myself,” Willoughby said. “It’s just about me looking out for and taking care of my students.”

“I carried her around for almost an hour and she was totally content,” Willoughby said. “We never heard a peep out of her the entire class.”

Dad Draws One-Of-A-Kind Eye Patches When Doctors Find Something Wrong With Daughter’s Eye

Wearing an eye patch every day can be tough for a little kid, but instead of letting his daughter feel self-conscious for being different, this artistic dad decided to make the best of the situation and make wearing an eyepatch a fun experience.

When Layla Grubb was 8-months-old, doctors discovered she had been born with a small cataract in one of her eyes. To let her weak eye gain strength, the doctors told dad Geoff Grubb that she would have to wear an eye patch over her eye for two hours each day for a few years until her eye was finally as strong as the other.

To make the process more enjoyable, Geoff decided to draw a fun new design on the eye patches each day.

“Patching can be frustrating for me as the parent, so this helps make it fun and it keeps me committed to doing it every day,” Grubb said. “We bought her some plain patches and I thought they were a little depressing so this was my way of making it more fun, especially for me.”

Since starting the project, Grubb started an Instagram account where he shares the cute design from the day, and has attracted nearly 13,000 followers.

“It was easy to come up with ideas at first but it’s gotten harder because I don’t want to repeat designs. I have a running list that my wife and family help me with. I’m always open to new cute ideas, though,” Grubb said.

Woman Captures The Heartwarming Moment A Soldier Goes Out Of His Way To Sit With A Homeless Man

We’ve all walked or driven past a homeless person, and avoided interacting with them at all cost partly because we’re unsure of their intentions, and partly because we’ve sadly been taught to. Which is exactly why one woman was shocked to see a soldier go out of his way to do what everyone else would have avoided.

While stopped at a stop light in Kansas on a Friday afternoon, Tammra Bose saw a car pull over on the side of the ramp of I-470 near where the homeless man was sitting, and a man dressed in an Army uniform got out and walked over to the man. Instead of quickly giving the man some change and getting back on his way, the soldier sat down beside him and simply talked with him.

Tammra was so surprised by what she had witnessed, she actually stopped and pulled over on the side of the road as well to watch the soldier and the homeless man interact. Before driving away, she managed to snap a quick picture to share what she had seen.

Tammra decided to share the photo she had taken on Facebook to remind people that soldiers aren’t just tough fighters, but compassionate citizens as well.

“I would love for the world to see this picture because it is worth more than a thousand words. It is so heartwarming,” Tammra told a local news station. “I thought it was nice of the soldier to get out of his car and go talk to the man.”

Loving Dog Becomes ‘Mom’ To 5 Orphaned Cheetah Cubs

In the past 100 years, the cheetah population has dropped from 100,000 to only about 9,000-12,000, which no qualifies them as an endangered species. So when the staff at the Cincinnati Zoo found out that their pregnant cheetah Willow was considered high risk, they did everything to keep her and her 5 babies healthy.

When it came time for delivery, the staff decided the best way to try and keep them all alive was to perform a rare C-section on Willow. Yet days after giving birth to her 5 healthy cubs, Willow passed away. “Cheetahs are a fragile species and this difficult birth proved to be too much for her to pull through,” said Zoo Director Thane Maynard. “Willow was able to contribute to the survival of her species by producing five cheetah cubs. Without the C-section, we likely would have lost both the mom and the cubs.”

Since their birth, the cubs have been getting around the clock care to make sure they stay healthy and develop normally.

To help fill their mother’s absence and provide comforting cuddles, staff introduced an Australian shepherd named ‘Blakely’ who is the Zoo’s resident nanny to the cheetah babies. “His first job is to let the cubs climb on him, which they did as soon as they were put together.  They need the exercise to build muscle tone and get their guts moving,” Strasser said.

As the cubs grow, Blakely’s role in their development will shift from climbable companion and hairy warm body to teacher and role model.

One Texas mom made sure to teach her daughter how to swim at just two-and-a-half years old so she would be safe around water, but that decision might just be the reason the 35-year-old is still alive today.

Mom Tracy Anderwald was spending some quality time with her now 5-year-old daughter Allison on a mommy-daughter-day in her sister’s backyard pool when she suddenly had a seizure while swimming. Tracy passed out and sank 4 feet down underwater to the pool’s floor, and would have died if not for Allison.

After over five minutes passed without her mom coming up for air, Allison knew something was wrong. The 5-year-old quickly ran into the water, dragged her mother to the shallow edge of the pool, flipped her over, and then ran to tell her Aunt Tedra so they could call 911.

“The doctors explained to us that had Tracy been underwater any longer, she probably wouldn’t be with us right now,” Tedra Hunt said. “It is truly amazing that this little girl, who’s actually also pretty small for her age, was able to save my sister.”

While big farm animals like cows have a nice dense coat of fur to keep them warm in chilly weather, even they aren’t prepared to handle frigid temperatures below 25 degrees.

Recently, Colorado experienced their worst snowstorm of the year, with some areas getting up to 20 inches of snow during the blizzard. At times, the snow was so bad that people were forced to abandon their cars on the side of the road as it became too dangerous to continue driving on the slippery ice-covered roads.

While out on patrol, Deputy Sue from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office was trying to make sure no one had been trapped in their cars on the side of the road. Yet as she worked, she noticed a black speck in the distance and went to investigate.

As she got closer, she realized that the black ‘speck’ was actually a baby calf who had been left during the storm, and had become trapped in the snow.

“She found this little guy buried in deep snow with no other cows around,” the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a post to their Facebook. “The rancher was also snowed in, so the calf was put in the back of her truck!”

Woman Tracked Down And Fell In Love With Her Anonymous Sperm Donor

For many couples, having a baby usually comes after at least going on the first date, but this unique couple had a very unusual way of getting to ‘happily ever after’…

When Aminah Hart and Scott Andersen, from Victoria, Australia, first met, it was about a year after their daughter Leila was born. In 2012, Aminah gave birth to her daughter after conceiving her through IVF with an anonymous sperm donor. The decision to have a baby through IVF came after the loss of Aminah’s first two children, Marlon and Louis, who had died as infants from a genetic disorder called X-linked myotubular myopathy.

While still trying to heal from the loss of her children, Aminah still wanted to be a mom, and chose Scott’s profile mainly because he described himself as happy and healthy, two things she desperately wanted for her own children.

Yet as soon as Leila was born, Aminah wanted her daughter to have her father in her life, as she had grown up without a father herself. Through some searching, she managed to track Scott down, and sent him a photo of Leila through the IVF register.

Scott agreed to meet his biological daughter, and was stunned at her resemblance. “It was surreal,” Andersen told The Telegraph. “I was looking at this little girl — she looks like my other kids and like me. Blonde hair, blue eyes. It was overwhelming at the start. It wasn’t really my daughter, but it was.”

“Neither of us expected it to happen,” Scott said. “I fell in love with Leila before I fell in love with Aminah! It was all odd at the start. But Leila’s beautiful. We arranged to meet once a month. Aminah and I became quite friendly and Leila started calling me daddy and coming to me all the time.”

Eventually, Aminah and Scott’s relationship turned romantic and Scott proposed on the day that would have been her late son Louis’ birthday. ‘He went out to get milk with Leila and came back with an engagement ring, which was a real surprise because usually I spent the anniversaries of their death and birthdays having a quiet day,’ Aminah said.

Twelve months later, Scott and Aminah finally got married in front of their closest friends and families. ‘I did set out to have a family the conventional way and if I didn’t have them I wouldn’t have Leila or Scott. I would have never been looking for a sperm donor or thought to go through IVF to have a baby on my own.’

Cops might not always have the best reputation- since they’re the ones responsible for daily annoyances like speeding tickets and parking tickets. But despite the inconveniences they cause, they really are just trying to make the world a better, safer place for everyone.

In order to show the kinds of things you have to be prepared to see and do as a cop, the New Zealand police released a social experiment they filmed to see if anyone would stop and help a small homeless boy rummaging through a trash can for food, and posed the question: “Do you care enough to be a cop?”

“We have filmed a series of real-life social experiment scenarios exploring issues our officers deal with daily – involving the safety of the young and the vulnerable people in our communities,” said Karen Jones, head of the police department’s public affairs team. “We wanted to see how many people would step up to help.”

The ‘hungry boy’, who was thin, pale, and covered in dirt, was played by an actor, but all the reactions to the situation were completely genuine. For 35 minutes, the police filmed about 500 walked by and completely ignored the homeless boy.

Unfortunately, many holiday traditions and activities were not made with kids with disabilities in mind, which forces parents to think of creative solutions so that their children don’t have to miss out on anything because of their differences.

When doctors told David Hyche that his then 4-month-old daughter, Rachel, had lost her vision after being born prematurely, he thought she’d never have a normal, independent life. But as she got older, Rachel insisted on doing everything herself, and David quickly realized that nothing would hold his daughter back.

When Rachel was a year old, David was helping his local church plan an Easter egg hunt and knew his daughter would not let someone lead her around and hand her eggs, so he decided to come up with a way to let her hunt for eggs on her own.

“I was researching online how she could do an Easter egg hunt and have fun with it and I found that people were already making beeping eggs,” David said. “I called a man in Los Angeles and he told me how he did it and then I came up with a cheaper way to do it.”

Since the start of the project, David, who is a special agent for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), has received help from the International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators to fund the making of more beeping Easter eggs, as well as send them out to anyone who requests them for a hunt for free.

“A lot of schools for the blind use the eggs year-round to teach kids how to locate things because it teaches them to use a logical pattern to search,” David said. “It’s teaching these kids independence. It’s not just an Easter egg hunt like it is for other people.”

Watch the entire video below to see more about how David came up with this genius solution.

For many dads, giving their daughters a dream wedding, and getting to walk them down the aisle is the final thing they get to do for their ‘little’ girls. 31-year-old Andy Barnard always looked forward to helping his daughter plan her wedding when she was older and promised to give her the wedding of her dreams.

However, that dream came to a halt when his 16-month-old daughter Poppy-Mai stopped eating and drinking, and became constipated. At first, doctors prescribed the baby some laxatives, but when she only got worse, mom Sammi Barnard took her to the emergency room where doctors discovered a cancerous mass in her stomach as well as a rare and fatal brain tumor.

Sammi and Andy had hoped Poppy-Mai would be able to fight the cancer, but once the brain tumor was discovered, doctors explained she only had two days to live. Andy, who had been serving with his squadron in America, was immediately sent home to England to spend as much time with his daughter as possible.

Sammi and Andy decided to take Poppy-Mai home to try and enjoy their time, and the next morning, Andy’s colleagues had planned for a wedding ceremony to take place so that Andy wouldn’t have to break his promise of giving his daughter a dream wedding.

“I couldn’t stop crying. Being our only daughter, we’d often talk about one day watching her get married,” Sammi said after escorting her baby down the aisle to ‘marry’ her hero dad.

“From the moment we found out Poppy-Mai was a girl I’ve said she’d have the wedding of her dreams one day,” Andy said.“I never ever thought it would be like this. Our hearts are broken forever, but I wanted to keep my promise to my princess. It wasn’t how I imagined, but she got her wedding day.”

Rescued Baby Bear Sisters Get Their First Bubble Bath

Like any other small children, baby bears can make a pretty big mess. So when sister Moon Bears Misty and Rain needed some cleaning up after a day full of playing and rolling around in the dirt, their caretakers thought they could use a bubble bath to clean up.

Like many other bears at Animal Asia’s Vietnam Bear Sanctuary, Misty and Rain lost their mom after poachers killed her for the wildlife trade. Without their mother, they would never have been able to survive the wild, so the bear sanctuary took them in to give them a safe home.

“Without a mother, they haven’t learned many of the basic skills that they’d need for survival,” said Steve Jackson, head of international communications at Animals Asia. “That, coupled with no safe place in Vietnam to release them, means Animals Asia makes a lifetime commitment to them.”

As part of their work raising the bears, the staff makes sure the bears are always occupied and are always experiencing new things.

While the bubble bath helps clean the two babies up after a long day playing in the mud and grass, the sanctuary also used this bubbly play-time to fulfill their sense of curiosity since they’ve never had a bubble bath before.

He might be the king of the jungle, but this young lion named Lambert is proving that even kings need their baby blankets for a good night of sleep.

Originally, Lambert had been illegally purchased by a dad for his two children after his 2-year-old and 3-year-old watched The Lion King. “The little kids told their daddy they wanted a Simba, so he went out and bought them one,” said Vicky Keahey, founder of Texas’ In-Sync Exotic Wildlife Rescue and Educational Center.

Soon enough, however, the family got tired of the 3-month-old lion cub, and contacted the Global Federation of Animals Sanctuaries (GFAS) to find him a home in a sanctuary as he was now too tame to be released into the wild. Keahey accepted Lambert immediately to her rescue center, and went to pick him up herself.

At first, Lambert seemed excited and was curious of his big, new exposure, but then got very anxious. “We had heard from the previous owners that he slept in the bed with the grandfather,” Keahey said as she started to realize the problem.

“I started thinking, ‘Okay, he’s used to being in a house, he’s used to sleeping in the bed with grandpa.’ So I got him a blanket, went into the enclosure and put the blanket in one of the corners. He curled up on that blanket and he went right to sleep. Ever since then, I always give him a blanket,” Keahey said.

While we cross busy roads all the time without a second thought, crossing a busy road can be a daunting task for small animals like koalas, as nearly two tons of metal comes hurling past them. Instead of trying to do it alone, this smart koala decided to get some help.

While trying to cross a busy highway in Queensland, Australia on a Saturday morning, this koala got about half way across before getting too scared, freezing in the middle of the road, and causing a traffic jam as no one could pass without hitting the furry creature.

Amazingly, instead of keep driving and possibly running over the frightened bear, everyone stopped and waited until a police officer arrived. After a few minutes, the patient cop was able to escort the koala bear safely across the road.

Once across, the tiny bear hopped safely into a tree beside the highway.

“He’s done the right thing, paying enough care and attention,” said Sunshine Coast University Professor Peter Timms who studies koalas. “Not everybody takes that bit of extra effort so that’s great by the officer to make sure it found its way somewhere safe up a tree.”
