Parents trust that schools will not only educate their children but keep them safe while in their care, which is why one mom was understandably furious when she found out that her 5-year-old son was found wandering alone on a busy street.
After kindergarten, 5-year-old Demetric Abernathy Jr. always gets on the school bus where he gets dropped off right outside his home, however, one afternoon he accidentally got off at the wrong stop. “I went off at the wrong place and I was walking,” the kindergartener said.
J.R. was left wandering by himself miles from the school and his home, and had no idea where he was. Luckily, a family friend drove by and spotted the scared little boy, pulled over, and immediately called mom Candace Pike to let her know what happened.
“When she put him on the phone with me my heart just sunk I started crying,” Pike said. “Then it being hot outside and him wondering around, he could have been hit by a car. That’s the same area that a dead body was just found in not too long ago.”
And now Pike wants to make sure this dangerous mistake never happens to her son or any other child at the school. “We feel like our procedures are working every single day with our students, but the procedure was not followed in this case,” said Superintendent Janet Womack, who assured Pike and other parents that they have contacted the bus company to deal with the issue.
