When the rescue team from the Windsor/Essex County Humane Society got a call about a stray dog wandering on the street, they figured it would be a typical rescue since the caller didn’t mention that the animal looked sick, weak, or injured.
When the team found the 1-year-old cocker spaniel-mix stray in a parking lot, they quickly realized that her long, floppy ears were severely infected. The team immediately rushed the dog, named Deema, to get medical treatment, however, her ears ended up falling off just a few days later despite their best efforts to save the tissue.
“The tissue was basically so necrotic that all the tissue in her external ears had died. Our vet really tried to save them but they were some damaged and the tissue was so damaged, they basically came off in her hands,” Humane Society director Melanie Coulter said. “She has no ears.”
At first, veterinarians believed the infection came from the inner ear, but her hearing appeared to be fine, so doctors now think Deema’s ears were injured somehow. “At this point, we still don’t even know what happened,” Coulter said.
Despite everything Deema has been through, she is still incredibly sweet and loving. This miracle dog is now finally getting the chance to be loved and find a forever home.
“Deema’s story has a happy ending, though, as she is now recovered and is ready for a new home,” the Windsor-Essex County Humane Society wrote on their Facebook.
