Many kids think they should get a new pair of sneakers at least once a year, but many kids are forced to wear the same pair of sneaker year after year until they are physically falling apart because their families can’t afford to buy new ones.
Unfortunately, many kids don’t realize how privileged they are to get new clothes and shoes whenever they feel like it, and when a group of privileged girls from Pullman middle school in Washington saw how destroyed and tattered one 12-year-old’s sneakers were, they ruthlessly bullied her about it.
When Sara, a sixth-grader at the school, saw the group of older girls bullying her classmate, she knew it wasn’t right and desperately wanted to do something to help. When she went home that day, she told her mom about what happened and asked if she could give the girl a pair of shoes that she didn’t need.
Sara invited the girl over and let her choose three pairs of shoes from her closet, and she now wears them every day and thanks her for her kindness. “I actually once was bullied before and I felt really bad and I just didn’t want her to feel that way,” said Sara.
Sara might not think what she did was a big deal, but when local police officers heard about her good deed, they surprised her with an ice cream delivery. “Parents, please remind your children of the importance of kindness, in our homes, schools, and community. One small act can have a big impact,” Officer Myklebust and the rest of the City of Pullman Police wrote on their Facebook. “We’re proud of you, Sara. Way to go!”
