I Became a Vegetarian One Year Ago and This is What Happened

In an act of solidarity with my college roommates who were trying to be healthy, I decided to try out being a vegetarian. Up until then, I rarely ate red meat unless it was part of a dish someone made for me, and honestly, I’d never craved meat the way many of my friends and family did.

Flash forward a year later, and my roommates have gone back to their meat-eating ways while I am still going strong with my vegetarian diet.

These are the 7 things that changed since giving up meat almost one year ago:

7. I’ve had to come up with an explanation to justify my dietary choices.

For whatever reason, people who eat meat become very uneasy the minute they hear I’m a vegetarian, and demand to hear my reasoning for giving up meat. I switch back and forth between telling people I simply don’t like meat, and that there are environmental reasons that spurred my decision. For the most part, I don’t mind answering the questions, but I do get a little annoyed when people try and force meat on me.

Not only would I get sick from eating it when I haven’t for months, but I don’t try to force my eating habits on anyone else, and it would be great if other’s didn’t feel the need to do that to me.

6. I don’t miss meat, but I do miss all the choices at restaurants.

Unless I go to a vegetarian friendly restaurant, most menus have at most about two to three meat-free options. And if I even think about complaining about not liking anything, my non-vegetarian friends are quick to remind me that my dietary restriction is a choice. This may be true, but it would be awesome if restaurants could add a few more options to the menu.

5. I obsessively have to read ingredients.

At first I started reading ingredient lists to see if the food contained meat, but now I obsessively read ingredients to see how much processed soy, carbs, and other fillers are in the food. People often think that anything ‘vegetarian’ is healthy, but I learned that’s not necessarily the case. It may take me a little longer at the grocery store, but I enjoy knowing exactly what I’m putting in my body.

4. I started eating so many new kinds of foods.

Before I became a vegetarian, I practically ate the same foods everyday, and it wasn’t until I gave up one of the major food groups that I became aware of how bored I was with my meals. Many people focus so much on the limitations that come along with being a vegetarian, but it was the only way I ever ventured beyond my dietary comfort zone.

3. I became acutely aware of the effect my diet had on my body.

Before starting my vegetarian lifestyle, I just accepted the fact that I would often feel sick or sluggish after eating. As soon as I started eating a more varied, plant-based diet, I realized that feeling full didn’t have to mean feeling sick.

And when I start getting lazy with my meals by relying too heavily on carbs and sugary snacks, I quickly notice my energy levels and attention span plummet.

2. Meat-eaters are now highly concerned with my health and protein levels.

Before I labeled myself as a vegetarian, I was more unhealthy than I am now, and literally no one cared. The minute I gave myself the label, everyone became extremely concerned with my protein and nutrient intake. This might come as a shock to meat-eaters, but there are plenty of other protein sources besides meat.

1. I naturally started making other healthy choices.

Being a vegetarian doesn’t guarantee you’ll become a healthy person overnight, in fact if you’re not careful, you may actually become more unhealthy. But when I started to take a more active role in my health and nutrition, I became inspired to start exercising regularly, cutting back on sugar, and spending more time outdoors.

Photographer Removes Phones to Show How Addicted We’ve Become

Chances are, your eyes look at your phone more than they make eye contact with other people in a typical day. In order to show how our phone addiction has caused us to neglect those around us, one photographer, Eric Pickersgill removed the smartphones and other devices from his portrait series.

Pickersgill was originally inspired to create the project, which he named Removed, after witnessing the all too familiar scenario of a family sitting together, but incapable of actually interacting with each other.

In his notes from that encounter, Pickersgill writes:

“Family sitting next to me at Illium café in Troy, NY is so disconnected from one another. Not much talking. Father and two daughters have their own phones out. Mom doesn’t have one or chooses to leave it put away. She stares out the window, sad and alone in the company of her closest family. Dad looks up every so often to announce some obscure piece of info he found online.”

Take a look at this photographer’s jarring project below.

The photographer was inspired by a chance observation in a café. He saw a family sitting together glued to their phones, and it hit him how technology was created to improve interaction, however, it has hindered our ability to interact in real life.

“It was one of those moments where you see something so amazingly common that it startles you into consciousness of what’s actually happening and it is impossible to forget.”

“I see this family at the grocery store, in classrooms, on the side of the highway and in my own bed as I fall asleep next to my wife,” Pickersgill said.”

“Despite the obvious benefits that these advances in technology have contributed to society, the social and physical implications are slowly revealing themselves.”

We have all seen- and are probably guilty of- this behavior, but by removing the phones from the subjects in the photos, the pictures really highlight how our phone addictions are destroying our relationships.

Motivation Monday: 7 Morning Rituals to Make Everyday a Good Day

$

If you find yourself struggling to make it through the day, letting things fall through the cracks, and overwhelmed with stress, it might be time to reconsider your morning routine. Without a solid start to the day, you lack the proper foundation to accomplish your goals.

With a morning routine that addresses both your physical and mental needs, you will transform into a driven, energized, and positive person. You may need to wake up earlier to fit in these morning rituals, but if you follow these 7 tips, your day is guaranteed to transform.

7. Set three goal for the day.

We all have seemingly endless to-do lists that we want to get accomplished each day, but never do because of our busy lives. Instead of setting yourself up for failure by having way to many things on your list, write down no more than three goals for the day. Once you write down those three things, make those things your top priority for the day.

Having just a few things to do will make getting things done seem more manageable, and will make you feel more confident in your abilities, and happy that you accomplished what you set out to.

6. Write down three things to be grateful for.

Writing down three things you’re grateful for will ensure you start your day off on a positive note. It’s easy to get wrapped up in silly problems and complications, but reminding yourself all you have to be thankful for will make those problems look silly in comparison.

Expressing gratitude has also been shown to improve sleep, improve self-esteem, and improve relationships.

5. Play uplifting music.

Scientists have proven that listening to your favorite songs can make you happier, but playing music as you get ready will make your routine feel less like a chore. Instead of dreading getting out of bed, you’ll soon start looking forward to waking up in the morning.

4. Move your body.

Whether you’re a runner or a yogi, find time to move your body every morning. It might be just a few minutes or a half hour, but moving your body will jumpstart the day and wake up your muscles. Not only will this help you connect to your physical body, but the endorphins will help you start the day with a positive outlook.

3. Drink a glass of warm lemon water.

After about eight hours of sleep, one of the most important things to do is rehydrate. Instead of drinking plain water, take this opportunity to add some lemon to warm water to boost energy, look younger, improve digestion, and reduce inflammation.

2. Meditate.

The benefits of meditation have been well documented, but it can be a challenging  ritual to adopt. Try replacing the time you spend looking through your email and Instagram feed with a few minutes of meditating. All it takes is a few minutes to start feeling more self-control, compassion, clarity, and patience.

1. Eat a real breakfast.

If you find yourself snacking all day long at your desk, it might be because you’re not giving yourself enough fuel in the beginning of the day. Eating a balanced meal in the morning will make you more efficient at work, and less likely to overeat before and during your next meal.

Will you try to add some of these rituals to your morning routine? Share with us in the comments below.

Bully Pours Super Glue On Girl’s Head and Her Reaction is Stunning

For Hannah Combs, high school was supposed to be a clean slate from the bullying she had already endured during elementary school. Unfortunately, just a few weeks into her freshman year, the bullying was just starting back up again.

The 15-year-old was innocently standing outside of Harker Heights High School, in Killeen, Tx., talking with friends when a boy came up from behind her and poured super glue on top of her head. Hannah was taken to the school’s nurse’s office, but her father Christian took her to urgent care because of the intense pain.

Despite the incident, Hannah is handling the situation with incredible poise and positivity.

It was only at the urgent care that Hannah was diagnosed with first degree burns from the incident. The boy, however, was only given three days of in-school suspension.

Christian was shocked and angered by the school’s lack of action with the bully.

“I’m not going to pull my daughter out and uproot her from her life because of what this kid did to her,” Christian said. “That child that did this to her, uproot his life. He gave up the opportunity to go to Harker Heights when he committed the act.”

Even with her positivity and the amount of support she’s received, Hannah was terrified at the thought of losing her hair.

“I realized I lost my favorite thing about me. I loved my hair,” Hannah said. “My hair was the only thing I liked about myself, honestly. I lost it for no reason.”

However, the glue had done too much damage, and Hannah and her mother Jessica decided the only option was cutting off much of her long hair.

“It instantly started burning,” Hannah said. “It felt like my head was on fire. It was horrible.” She described the burn as feeling like a “sun burn times 10.”

A local hairstylist, Nikki, heard about what had happened to Hannah, and offered to cut and style her hair for free.

“Today I got to do something I’m proud of. I fixed a young girls hair who had something traumatic happen to her at school. Her hair had to be shaved on one side, so I made the best of a bad situation,” Nikki said.

And when Hannah’s mom made a Facebook group called ‘Justice for Hannah,’ the teen received an outpouring of support. Many even questioned the school’s reaction (or, lack thereof).

“It makes me want to help other people,” Hannah said. “There are people who couldn’t stand up for themselves but they talk to me about it. It makes me want to help. It’s amazing how many people are supporting me.”

All the support has made Hannah view this experience as an opportunity to grow. She now hopes to help others deal with their bully struggles.

“I want to make a difference. I would like people to stand up for themselves. No one deserves to be bullied — it’s not fair for anyone,” she said. “I’m just a normal kid with strong beliefs. When it comes to bullying, I stand up for people a lot because of it — but it’s worth it.

To celebrate her 44th birthday, Koko the gorilla asked if a kitten could come and visit her. Instead of just a single kitten, Koko’s caretakers brought her an entire litter to play with.

Despite her formidable size, Koko is actually incredibly gentle, and has very strong maternal instincts, which make the tiny kittens a perfect match for her.

Koko has been using sign language to communicate with her caregivers since she was a baby, and for her birthday she asked if a kitten could visit her.

Find Out What ‘Back to the Future’ Got Right About 2015

Today, October 21, 2015, is officially the ‘future,’ according to Back to the Future Part II. The movie, which was released in 1989 almost 26 years ago, attempted to predict what life in 2015 would look like when Doc and Marty find themselves in the future.

In some ways, the movie got some predictions wrong, but they did manage to get an impressive amount right. Take a look at some of the best predictions from Back to the Future Part II to see what they got right, and what they got wrong.

Prediction: Hoverboards will replace Skateboards

Accuracy: False

Of all the predictions the movie made, the most memorable “futuristic” invention was the hoverboard. Unfortunately, this prediction was false as hoverboards have not replaced skateboards. There are, however, hands-free segways and a few hoverboard prototypes in the works.

Prediction: Fingerprint technology will exist.

Accuracy: True

In the movie, people use their fingerprints as payment, identification, and to unlock doors. While we haven’t started using fingerprints as much as the movie predicted, most people unlock their iPhones with fingerprints, and you can actually buy thumbprint scanning door locks.

Prediction: Fax machines will be everywhere.

Accuracy: False

Thankfully, this prediction was totally wrong, and we don’t have houses full of fax machines. What the movie did get right though, was the idea that our most popular means of communication would change. Instead of the fax machine, we use computers and smart phones to send quick messages.

Prediction: Cars will Fly

Accuracy: False

Whether it be The Jetsons, or Back to the Future, flying cars have always been the most prevalent futuristic advancement. While some cars in 2015 can drive and park themselves, they still can’t fly.

Prediction: We will have wearable technology.

Accuracy: True

In the movie, people in 2015 use wearable boomboxes and TV visors. While we don’t have wearables for those exact things (although the TV visors are very similar to Google Glass) we do have many kinds of wearable technologies like the Apple Watch, the Fitbit, and GoPros.

Prediction: We will use video calls to talk to people.

Accuracy: True

Today, apps like FaceTime and Skype make talking face-to-face with friends and family all over the world possible.

Prediction: People will read the news from newspapers.

Accuracy: False

While you can still read the newspaper to find out the news, most people today read the news on their phones, tablets, or computers.

Prediction: The President in 2015 will be a woman.

Accuracy: False/Pending

While the President in 2015 isn’t a woman, there is a chance there will be a female President thanks to candidate Hillary Clinton.

Mike and Lauren Whiteley were in for the shock of their lives when they found out that they were expecting triplets instead of the baby girl they had hoped for. While the number came as a shock to the couple, what surprised doctors even more was the fact that these triplets were identical, which only occurs once in every million births.

“The fact that they’re identical is incredible. It’s the first set of identical triplets I’ve ever seen. I’ve been in neonatology for 40 years,” said Dr. Savitri Kumar of Detroit’s Henry Ford hospital.

Lauren and Mike were finally able to take the triplets home after staying in the neonatal intensive-care unit (NICU) for about a month.

“They’ve been great. We were pretty worried about how they’d be when we came home, but everything has been smooth sailing. We’re thankful for all the help. We’ve been able to give them one-on-one attention thanks to our parents, family and friends,” said Lauren.

If a picture is worth a 1,000 words, imagine all the things you can say with the 150 new emojis that came part of the iOS 9.1 upgrade. Whether you’re running late, hungover, or deciding what to eat, there’s a new emoji that will say exactly what you  mean.

Take a look at some of the best ways you can start putting the new emojis to good use:

5. When your boyfriend get impatient when you’re getting ready:

Some people may think you take too long to get ready, and when they complain, you can now adorably remind them to shut their mouths.

4. When you’re Facebook stalking your ex and his new girlfriend:

We’ve all been there, but we’ve never had a not-so-creepy way to say we’re literally stalking our ex’s life and his pretty new girlfriend. Just know that when the new spy/sleuth emoji becomes the most accurate answer to what you’re doing after a breakup, it’s time to step away from the computer.

3. When you’re trying to rally your friends to go out drinking:

It’s Friday afternoon, you just got paid, and all you want to do is blow off some steam with your friends… and maybe a few drinks. Instead of having to admit to your friends that you just want to get drunk, let the emojis speak for you.

2. When you’re hungover from said night out:

We’ve all had one too many the night before, and felt like you were dying the next day. When you can’t manage to type a coherent sentence, never-mind keep solids or liquids down, the new emojis will be a lifesaver when you need to let your friends know that you are in fact alive.

1. When it’s time for Chipotle:

There’s a reason there are no salad emojis. Neither of you actually want to be healthy and go get a salad, and the new taco and burrito emojis will come in handy when your friend leaves the food plans up to you.

The Top 3 Ways You’re Destroying Your Relationship Everyday

$
0
0

We often think that relationships are ended after a major fight or mistake, but the truth is, relationships are destroyed by some of the seemingly small things you may be doing everyday.

Breakups don’t happen overnight – or by accident- they happen because of small, yet significant, mistakes. Here are the top three major mistakes you could be making that are destroying your relationship.

3. You harbor your negative emotions.

When things get a little rocky, your instinct is to calm the situation right away. While holding in any negative emotions will resolve the issue quickly, it will eventually end up resurfacing in the form of jealousy, resentment, or paranoia. In the end, holding in even the smallest negativities will suck the happiness and love out of any relationship.

Instead, air out your issues as they happen, and ensure that you and your partner have resolved the problem fully before moving on.

2. You’re laying all the blame on your partner.

Think about the last fight you had. If you mainly spoke about your partner’s actions, you may need to step back and reevaluate. Maybe your request wasn’t as clear or rational as you thought it had been.

Every relationship is a two-way street, and as much as you try to deny it, your partner isn’t the only one to blame when something goes wrong. The more you start focusing on your own actions, the sooner you’ll begin to see patterns in your behavior, and be able to fix the situation.

Not to mention, throwing all the blame on another person can feel like an attack, which is never the way an interaction with the person you love should feel.

1. You neglect yourself.

Neglecting to take care of your appearances can mean your comfortable with your partner, but it’s a slippery slope to neglecting your own feelings and your own identity. When you neglect yourself emotionally, you become dependent on your partner for validation and your self worth, which feeds your fear of being rejected. No relationship will last when you’re constantly afraid of being rejected.

When you learn to take care of yourself separate from your relationship, you’ll be less fearful of rejection, which in turn, lets you open your heart more fully to loving your partner.

Genius Students Make Wheelchair That Climbs Stairs

While many public places are required to be wheelchair accessible, there are still so many places where stairs prohibit wheelchair access. This incredible two-wheeled wheelchair called the Scalevo, which was a final-year student project, could change countless lives because of its stair-climbing technology.

Miro Voellmy, a mechanical engineering student at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, explained, “The great thing is that everything on this wheelchair is automated. If I want to climb the stairs I can just drive up to them, turn around, press one button and all I have to do is control the velocity I want to drive at. The alignment on the stairs, the leveling of the wheelchair driver, is automated and he can control it, he can view the back with a back facing camera, and have a full, safe, driving experience.”

Scalevo is not yet available commercially, however, the 10 students who developed the wheelchair are thinking about making a Kickstarter campaign to make the chair available to everyone.

For most people in wheelchairs, getting up stairs like this would be nearly impossible without the help of someone else.

The two treaded tracks climb backwards up the stairs, and can mount one stair per second. The chair can even climb curved stairs like spiral staircases.

The athletes may have been the star of the day at a West Virginia University football game, but to this young boy, the state troopers were the real heroes.

According to Braedon Mullins mother, Dreama, his eyes lit up as soon as he saw the state troopers on the field, as he has always been fascinated with the West Virginia police, and helping get the ‘bad guys’ off the streets.

Rather than ask for the athletes’ autographs, Braedon approached the state troopers standing guard, and asked if they would sign his football.

“I thought it was pretty cool that all those football players were out there and he was watching us,” Cpl. Donnie White said. “You can’t put a price tag on that.”

For months, an Ontario mother’s young daughter had been wanting to learn how to skateboard, but had always been too afraid because she thought skateboarding was just for boys. After months of convincing, Jeanean took her daughter to the local skatepark to finally learn.

However, when the two first arrived at the park, they were disappointed when they saw it was full of intimidating teenage boys. Jeanean’s daughter immediately wanted to turn around and go home, but she made her stay because she didn’t want to think skating was ‘just for boys.’

However, Jeanean never expected to see what happened next when one of the boys approached her daughter. Later that day, Jeanean wrote a letter to the boy at the skatepark called “Dear teenage boy at the skate park.”

‘I secretly wanted to go too because I didn’t want to have to put on my mom voice and exchange words with you. I also didn’t want my daughter to feel like she had to be scared of anyone, or that she wasn’t entitled to that skate park just as much as you were. So when she said, ‘Mom it’s full of older boys,’ I calmly said, ‘So what, they don’t own the skate park.’ She proceeded to go down the ramp in spite of you and your friends flying past her and grinding rails beside her.”

“She only had two or three runs in before you approached her and said Hey, excuse me…” I immediately prepared to deliver my ‘She’s allowed to use this park just as much as you guys’ speech when I heard you say, Your feet are wrong. Can I help you?’ You proceeded to spend almost an hour with my daughter showing her how to balance and steer, and she listened to you – a feat not attained by most adults. You held her hand and helped her get up when she fell down and I even heard you tell her to stay away from the rails so that she wouldn’t get hurt.”

“I want you to know that I am proud that you are part of my community, and I want to thank you for being kind to my daughter, even though your friends made fun of you for it. She left the skate park with a sense of pride and with the confidence that she can do anything, because of you.”

Raking up all of the fallen leaves may mean hours of tiring work for humans, but for dogs, the seasonal chore is just another excuse to have some fun.

After this family spent the afternoon raking up all the leaves in their backyard, their dog Stella decided to crash the party… and crash into the fresh leaf pile a few hundred times.

This freshly raked leaf pile provided the perfect cushion, as Stella recklessly chased after a ball during a game of fetch.

Stella dove into the pile head first, and wouldn’t resurface until retrieving the tennis ball.

Stick Thin Model Speaks Out After Agency Says She’s ‘Too Big’

Although the modeling industry has lately been featuring more shapely models like Bella Hadid, it seems those instances are still the exception, not the rule.

A British model, Charli Howard, has gone viral after posting a long note to her Facebook that offers a glimpse into the real pressures of non-celebrity models. Despite being a size 2 (US), the naturally thin model was told she was ‘too big’ and ‘out of shape’ by her former modeling agency.

“I refuse to feel ashamed and upset on a daily basis for not meeting your ridiculous, unobtainable beauty standards, whilst you sit at a desk all day, shoveling cakes and biscuits down your throats and slagging me and my friends off about our appearance. The more you force us to lose weight and be small, the more designers have to make clothes to fit our sizes, and the more young girls are being made ill. It’s no longer an image I choose to represent,” were just some of the words she wrote in her post.

In her post to Facebook, Charli proclaimed “I will no longer allow you to dictate to me what’s wrong with my looks and what I need to change in order to be ‘beautiful’ (like losing one f***ing inch off my hips), in the hope it might force you to find me work.”

Charli stands at 5’8″ and is naturally a size 2 in U.S. In the past, she had whittled her already thin frame down to just over 100 lbs., but her agency still didn’t think she was thin enough.

Despite the issues she has faced, Charli still loved modeling, and hopes to find an agency that will represent her as she is.

“Ironically, I do love modeling – the people I’ve met, the places I’ve visited and I am proud of the jobs I’ve done. I will continue to do it, but only on my terms. My mental and physical health is of more importance than a number on a scale, however much you wish to emphasize this,” said Charli.
